Smell of Fuel coming into cabin

Hi all,

Ive recently found out that there is a vague smell of fuel coming into the cabin, when the windows are down there is a vague smell of fuel coming from the side vents. The exhaust does sound louder/boomier in the cabin, could this be an exhaust problem?

Regards

James.

Ah yes, forgot to mention its a phase 1 : )

65000 miles on it, looking through the history, there doesn't seem to be a sign that the exhaust has been changed too..

Has your fuel consumption gone up recently? Do you hear an "underloading" engine sound when acceleration say in 3rd gear around the 3k-3.5k rev band?

I had those symptoms and strong fuel smell in the cabin only after realizing that one of the fuel rail was cracked. Not recommend to drive it when it is cracked cos we all know about how firey a vee can get.

The fuel rail are made of plastic and are handed according to which bank of cylinders it serves. Hope this helps.

Hi there

Many thanks for the reply, The fuel economy seems the same really, I shall investigate further tomorrow though, see if I get that engine sound under load and those revs, If it is that will definitely stop driving it until its sorted.

Here is a postthat I made late last year when I was having fuel smell in the cabin.

If you take the plastic cam cover trim off it is easier to look for wet patches.

I should have been a bit clear on how to reproduce that sound, say you have 3rd hovering around 2k rev and then accelerate (not hastily) into around 3-3.5k rev. I find accelerating slowly and when the engine is hot is the easiest to reproduce that sound.

Hi there,

Many thanks for the link to the thread,

Just been out in the car and can't seem to replicate the sound.
When I'm home later, I'll pop off the van cover and have a look, see if there is a wet patch.

Mine also had fuel smell but also failed MOT emissions

Scott at SG said check the rear cat pipe for cracks / leaks and sure enough it was broken

Easy repair just welded it - quite common for these but you'd need take the pipe off I think to inspect

Other cause could be fuel vent valve relatively cheap to replace

Many thanks for the reply,

I think I will pop down to see Scott, be good for him to give it a check over for peace of mind as well,

It's not seemed as bad today for some reason my first putting caught out in the rain aswell, and with new tyres......
