Simple fix???

Should have known nothing to be simple on the vee. Noticed my rear number plate light was not working, changed the bulb still nothing- all other lights working so figured fuse was fine. Took to a local dealers i sort of trust, had a look needed a new holder and part of the loom. Cost £75- as my MOT is due soon and work nights, with having an inch of mud on the plate already i decided just to get it done rather then risk points. However some of you may know i got the car back in november after a full respray- while the mechanic was taking the bulb holder out of the housing he chipped some of the paint off the holder :crying:
Going back thursday for them to have a bash at fixing it. If not its not going to be cheap....

Dont trust them at £75 for fixing a number plate light [smilie=icon_eek.gif] , bulb holder is £8.50, the wiring loom to it is part of the main loom so cant be replaced unless you have about £1000 to spend.

The number plate wiring comes off main loom behind the nearside rear light out through back panel and into the bumper void, i am sure a soldering iron would of fixed any wiring problem. It would be good to ask them for a part number on the wiring loom they replaced !!!!

If thats the damage they do poping out a number plate light think what they could do on a cam belt change.

Dont let them off the hook cos they are so called professionals, which I why I do everything I can myself, dealers make me shudder, going have to take mine in for a key reprogramming, I hoping its while you wait job, so i can keep an eye on it.

Bet your gutted, if they play up write to the dealer principal (AKA the boss and CC Renault custober services as well) they dont like that at all

Because they had to replace that part of the loom as well, could not separate the holder from it, this was on the first visit and no way was it going to budge. They managed to sort me it out, i know they used another part and made it work- think crank sensor loom iirc??
Know what your saying about chips away looch but they would not be able to get a perfect match- i.e like it had just come out the bodyshop so if this repair fails then they will be paying for it to be put right.
And when i say i trust them- i don't but if i didn't do a large amount of my driving at night i would have waited until the car goes for service/MOT at birchdown- but as i said to the manager, "why do renault think it is acceptable that i have to take my car 50 or so miles to someone when i trust when i have 3 renault dealers within 12 miles of my house?

Hi mate

If you wanna have a look at the work they did on mine...its a spot on match (granted illiad is easier to match than liquid) but it may help you decide.

Let me know fella

Hope its sorted soon

Looks like they have leveraged a screwdriver against the paint ... bit of a schoolboy error but easily done ... obvious thing to do is to use some tape or a rag to stop this kind of thing but am sure we have all done it ... if it was me I'd be pretty annoyed too, you can tolerate your own mistakes more easily but not those of others ...

Martin

The dealer should arrange a professional repair to the bumper, to return the bumper to the same condition that existed when you left the car in their care. I would not accept a touch up job, and would certainly not be paying for it either.

Give Chipsaway a call....They are a mobile franchise who come out to you. I used them before, they are very good and are competetive...Looking at that it would be under a ton

http://www.chipsaway.co.uk/

i have a chipsaway franchise up in scotland, think im a bit far away from you, lol.

def give chipsaway a call though, great service and quality repairs.

looking at that wouldnt be much more than a tonne, good luck

Its worth remembering 2 points with chips away, they are all franchises so the sprayer maybe very good and match it without a problem or he maybe fresh out of a weeks training.

Its also important to remember that a SMART repair as chips way will do is only cosmetic its not a body shop repair, the paint used will be different for various reasons I wont go into but in the main although the colour if done correctly (its all about the application and clear coat with your yellow) matches at first it will react differently to light and heat. It depends on how long you will keep the car but after a few years you will notice a change in the paint and colour, the heat from behind the bumper may speed this process up as will UV light.

If the garage are at fault get it into a bodyshop and they will have to foot the bill

As Chris says above... Wouldn't want to chance it, if it was my pride and joy.
Agree with both, and my experience of my local chipsaway is not good. Couldn't match the sunflower yellow of my meg coupe, so don't want to risk with LY as it is quite difficult to match- only reason its going back to them is for a chance of redemption. Thinking it will need respraying anyway but at least i've given them a chance. Am very worried about leaving it with them, will be a very detailed walk round and photo's taken- if only birchdown were closer...
Then there is the question why should i accept a smart repair when i only had it back 6wks from a complete spray?

OMG mate sorry to see that - gutted for you. Whatr kind of plonkers stick a screwdriver head there to get the light out!!!

LY is a 3 stage pearl built up slowly over layers so I reckon would be hard to blend in. I'd get it sorted properly and get them to pay.

yip it is a franchise so there will be sum useless guys out there who bring the chipsaway name
down, ive repaired a aston martin db9,aston martin vantage, nissan GTR,bentley continental and
some other stunning cars in last year alone and owners have been delighted with the repairs.just
annoying were brought down by incompotent people in the network,we offer great value and a lifetime guarantee
on all our work.

id take it where your confident it will be good job and get them to pay mate.

TOTALLY AGREE STEVE, i think the car would be going through the window.

If it's any consolation my garage superglued the lamp into my bumper, that wasn't such an easy (or cheap) fix.

Car went in yesterday, and the bloke who does there mobile repairs was unwilling to paint it as he could not get a good enough match. He has touched it in though. Dealer rang 5min ago saying they want me to take it back to the bodyshop where i had it done in order for it to be sorted properly. Slightly happier- be fully satisfied when its had the spray job!

That's better news pugs, should get it back to perfect.

Just for anyone wanting to change the rear number lamp cluster, it is best to remove the rear bumper and prise the lamp cluster from underneath. I know this sounds a pain but damage like the above is due to the soft fibreglass (and in this case plain carelessness of course!!).

Cheers, and without the pain of an empty wallet!
