Scotland 2012

Guy's...... I'd just thought we'd throw ideas into the pot and well just pick out the good bits.

I'll kick off......... For scenery you can't beat the west coast, Your can get really remote ( and i mean right out of it ) and have some fantastic roads.

Weather wise, It's Scotland and you just take your chance's......... And if it's going to rain your guaranteed it will kick of in the west. Late in the summer seems to be the best.

Are we just going to pound the miles on or plan a couple of stop off's on the way ? Is there anywhere members would like to see/go ?

Just fire off any ideas or wishes guy's and we'll plan it as best we can. I wish we had some car shows / events we could have crashed on mass, but they are a bit thin up here.

Ian, Any help would be welcome, Some boy's will have travelled far and would like to get it right for them, 600 miles for a warm beer and a Micky-Dee's wont cut it i fear.

Some initial thoughts:

It really comes down to how much time / money people want to spend - for those travelling some way just to get on the right side of the border, ideally I'd be suggesting allowing 3/4 nights - that way the driving will remain enjoyable rather than become an endurance challenge.

West Highlands for the most spectacular roads / scenery (in my view) although those coming from daaawn saarf may as well sample The Borders (highly recommended) on the way up (or down). I'll yield to our Border's based members on that part of the county.

From a central belt start (Edinburgh / Glasgow) head to the northern tip of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National park (could easily spend a day exploring amazing roads around there with overnight stay). Then north via Glencoe, Fort William (the battleground for part 1 of eCoty 2003 which featured the ph2 vee) and into the wilderness from there! Good overnight base in the heart of West Highlands - The Torridon Inn. Would allow easy access to some amazing roads, and also an easy hop over to the Isle of Skye, perhaps another overnight stay there to explore the island (well worthwhile!). Back to central belt (Knockhill if anyone wants a taste of Scotland's race circuit) and homeward bound from there.

That would be my suggestion to give a good flavour of some of what Scotland has to offer. :salut:

Try the MOD owned road that go's across from close to Loch Lomond Golf Club to Faslane.
Its open to the public ! Drove it a couple of years ago and its fantastic, great condition, scenery, and great sweeping bends.
Was told that "Top Gear " had hired the road in the past and used it to test a few cars.
It has barriers that can be lowered to close it off and its a fair distance long, got to be over 10 miles ?
Might be as great introduction road for your trip up the west coast.

Guy's you are reading my mind, I did water sports for 10 years and spent a lot of time round Loch Lomond. It's a stunning part of the world and i have a real soft spot for it.

Glencoe is a must, You will have never felt so small and insignificant driving through there. ( very humbling and a stunning landscape )

Olly, I know that road, It's tight in places and of course there is the sheep all over the place, But the view out over the sea loch's when your going back down the other side is stunning.

This all makes up a good first day...... Keep them coming lads.

I think the next question is how long do you want it run over, Do we just do a weekend ( two day's and one night stop ) and do a big loop. Or do we go longer ?

how about cairngorm and glen shea via tomintoul. great road that.... i'd be up for a few days [smilie=yay.gif]

This sounds just the ticket Sean [cmilie=iconcheers.gif] I'd be willing to make it 3 or 4 days so as to make it really worthwhile :race:

Phill

Thanks for the input Phill. I reckon that would be a good start, Now depending how many would like to get involved we can plan taking it further into no man's land......LOL

All sounds good to me.

Sean, glad to see you've picked up the mantle; Look forward to future events.

Getting people to commit will always be an issue, usual forum eagerness is always there, but when it comes to committing and putting ones money where their mouth is, it's a different matter altogether.

Fingers crossed for a clean and sensible run without any incidents.

Amen to that brother.......LOL

Right........... Both Ian & Martin have pitched in with help and route advise, Thanks lads ( Think a couple of beers and a map night might be in order )

I'm going to try and map it all out instead of spouting of road numbers ( God's know how but i'll give it a bash )

Next thing is dates, I know you guy's with have other events planned........ So now I have to find a window to do this in. ( again need some input here )

I hope to stick up a couple of route options and some dates, Then we'll start counting heads/ Vee's ........

As for ideas, what the local guys think would be fine, as for my attendance depends as in the next couple of months looking to move houses so date dependant but if nothing on i'll be there!
