on my way home today down the lovly roads round Bala (im sure a few of you are familiar)

was going through the gears coming out of a junction and it got to 3rd an it felt like it had hit a brick wall, the revs wouldnt go past 4k an then were dropping then going up then down. i let my foot off the accelerator and it backfired. i changed into fourth and it was fine again.

it did it again later on exactly the same.

whats going on!?!?!?! :( [smilie=icon_eek.gif] [smilie=icon_eek.gif] :( [smilie=icon_eek.gif] :(

If its a coil why would it only happen in third gear? I am not questioning anyone just wondering for future reference as this is all a learning experience for me and I know sweet FA about the mechanics of cars! Just bought two more coils so I have three now after selling one to Brett! Sounds like a strange one Jack:(

It wouldn't be related to what gear the car is in as the gearbox and motor are seperate units and don't require each other to work properly. Like Mike says it could be when the car s under a certain ammount of load. Bit of a sod to find if it is.

Had similar on mine - 4krpm wouldnt rev / spluttered

Was the fuel pump - had sat in a dealers on low fuel so it rusted to bits - strange thing is that the ECU / OBD fault computer didnt pick this up

Get a specialist / dealer to put a clip on when driving to check the fuel pressure

Could be a coil as well, would think warning lights come on the dash first though

i was thinking possible fuel pump because i have had coils go on previous cars iv owned and they can usually be heard in the exhaust tone and the misfiring. this was a definate drop in power like the engine being starved of fuel. 4k was its limit but when i changed gear it just released a large pop from the exhaust and off it went again.

filled up on saturday before i went to the brim with vpower

only the best ;)
