Replacing Brakes?

Hi Guys,

I hope you're all well.

I'm starting to think that my brakes on my MKII Vee need doing pretty soon. My car is a late 53 plate with 16000miles on the clock.

It has never been tracked and clearly the brakes haven't been caned as they still work not too badly! I feel though that I may be starting to hear a bit of scrape when I brake so I thought I should look into this.

Have you guys gone for new brakes all round or just fronts first? (i.e., will the rears be less worn than the front? - I know this is probably a silly question considering the front weight distribution when braking).

I'd like to get some performance pads/possibly grooved discs (or maybe that's going to be too costly?)? How much is this likely to cost me?

Thanks very much for your time to read this!

Cheers,
Phil.

When was your car last service Phil ?

Check for brake pad wear which is easy on the Vee as you can see the pads through the wheel spokes ;-)

Red stuff pads and Mintex are the common replacements.

There is a Wiki article on rear brakes with some information too.

I think it is fair to say most people find the stock set-up pretty adequate for normal use and even for the odd track day. Pads seem to be a common upgrade - disks less so.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your response.

The service was done by the last owner at 12,000 (about 1.5 years ago).

At how many millimetres of pad left should I start thinking about replacing them?

I was looking at these to replace on the front - http://www.yozzasport.co.uk/store/prodd ... 2500_front

Are these any good do you think?

Cheers,
Phil.

DS2500s are fine for the front (actually they're pretty good). You can also look at EBC redstuff ceramics for the rear - don't go near a main dealer for either sets of pads it'll cost you a fortune.

Discs really shouldn't be an issue at all at the mileage you've done.

Front pads will always wear fastest due to weight transfer during breaking - they end up doing the lions share of the work.

Great, that's really helpful thankyou!

Are the fronts quite easy to do? I've seen the guide to doing the rears in the Wiki. I'm certainly pretty novice at this kind of stuff, so wouldn't want to try something out of my league!

(is it expensive to get somewhere like K-Tec to fit them?)

Cheers,
Phil.

Fronts easier to replace than rears, as you have to wind them back,

Clean all surfaces and with EBC do not use the shims.

Use a little copper slip on the backs od pads and the retaining pins etc.

See Wiki for min dimensions of discs, mine covered 65k before replacemet.

ebc on the rear of mine but keep squealing...
have got my new rear discs from renault now...but am still undecided on where to go for the pads.

When i bought my vee over a month ago the pads looked a little thin, not overly but i thought for piece of mind id change em myself.

A full set of Mintex pads set me back just £60 all in! Saved myself well over £400 by doing them myself and not going to the stealers to get ass raped lol

Do not pads get to below 3mm othetrwise you can damage the disca and you will not get full braking from high speed

I've noticed that there are a fair few different types of Mintex pads for the Vee.

Is it the Xtreme ones that I need to get?

Cheers,
Phil.
