RenaultSport Clio 172, 53 Plate, Silver.

Dave, looks like i've missed out on Phil's 182........do you have any upto date details regarding your 172......if you still have it that is.....

Ta very muchly......

Still got it, think Chris is borrowing it while I do cambelt & dephaser on the one you missed.

53 plate, quite leggy at 133k BUT it put out more power on the rollers in OE form than any other ive seen (167bhp, usually see about 155-160 from most). Regular servicing, mostly motorway miles.

All the usual stuff has been done....cambelt, dephaser, pulleys, tensioners, everything. Recent oil, plugs (?50 for the damn plugs!), brand new genuine rear shocks, poly bushes on the outers ARB, new balljoints, new hazard switch and I fixed the usual windscreen washer issue which means its got awesome screen washers. It's got Xenons, cruise, climate, ESP, ABS, Auto lights and wipers and all the usual stuff.

Genuinely outpaced a newer 197 on a PH run. The owner was miffed.

Needs: AC regas (never bothered), and the green stuff front pads are very disappointing in performance and I want to change em (only 500 miles old). Solid little car, not too bothered about selling it as I really like it, would consider it if the right offer came up I guess.
Oh, I wanna stick a new exhaust on it, the universal backbox is quite loud and a bit barry, but it got me out of a spot when the OE rear box split.

Thanks Dave.......I'll maybe try & catch up with Phil & Chris to have a look.....when are you dropping off/collecting...????

By the way, was really looking for a phase 1 - have you had any experience in the phase 1..??

Also, you'd keep up with a 197 in a 1.2 campus......:cop:

Jon, I have a ph1 clio sport. I like it, she has a certain charm about her, but I still want my 21 back on the road.

The steering wheel melts. Switch gear and electrics are french. The gearboxs have been known to give when abused. There good but the 172 cup is supposed to be better. I would check the usual has been done and then buy on condition.

The ph1's were the only model that had an accelarator cable, it was fly by wire after that, some say the ph1 gives better accelarator feel.

A good 172 cup is definetly worth seeking out, bit plainer seats but if you can live with that then cool, thinner windscreen glass etc, although 182 cups are cracking aswell, or go Trophy .. lol

do the CUPS have abs ?

NO the cups have no abs, no ESP, no ac, poverty spec interior, no xeons, no headlight jets, no auto lights, no auto wipers. They still have elec windows, central locking and are stiffer, lower and revised castor, camber and of course speedline turini's :-)

All of the above obviously helps keep the weight down (89kg apparently over a normal spec) but most importantly far less French electrics to go wrong!!

I've had my cup for about 6 months now and I love it. The handling is emmence. I've drove loads of 172s, 182s and the cup is completely different in standard trim to the fatter models in a far better way!

They didn't do a phase 1 "cup"

They might have had option cup packs like all the other renaultsport models but as far as I know the only true "cup" is the phase 2 in mondial blue and the later models were available in iceberg silver

Oops, sorry ... forgot about the ph1 Cup ..

Cracking car, i went to buy one about 4 yrs ago but my girlfriend hated it and i let her talk me out of it ...

As already said, there was no ph1 Cup, there was a ltd edition ph1 172 which only came in scarab green and had full leather interior, it was ltd to 172 models, but performance wise it was the same as the normal ph1 172.

Apprantly these ph1 172's are a very good car, good standard ones are getting sought after now, have a go in one if you get the chance.

TBH, all 172 / 182's are good, i dont think any are bad. I have driven a bog standard 182 in anger and thought it was excellent.

Well' i've spoken to a chap who is selling a phase 1 cup - it has no autolights/wipers etc & he says it states "cup" on the log book.....this isn't a ltd edition green 172 either......very bizarre........

I'm sure daveL485 will clear this thread up in a min :-)

Oh....go on then.

The first Clio RS was the 3rd from RenaultSport after the 16V and Williams. Its a boggo Clio with wider arches, different bumpers, rims etc. and the F4R-730 engine. The engine is not (contrary to popular misconception) an evolved F7R, it was a new engine (seen in other models but not tuned) and put out about 167 hp.
A limited edition "Exclusive" was produced, 172 of em. They were green, and had a full leather interior as opposed to half leather and alcantara.

There was a facelift in 2001 and the accelerator throttle was changed for an electronic one, minor changes to the cylinder head, new airbox (but crapper) and one CAT with two Lambda's instead of 2 CAT's like the Ph1. The gear ratios were closed up to make up for the increase in weight. Shiny bits (like mine has) are automatic xenon headlights with washers, 4 airbags, better seats with logo embroidered and bigger wheels, 16".

Clear so far?

2002........172 Cup arrived, chassis code CB1N. Most were produced in Blue and a few in Silver. No Leather seats, Xenon Headlights, auto wipers etc, but did have Speedline Turini Alloy wheels and a plastic front splitter. They ripped out the sound deadening and used thinner glass to save weight and I think most (earlier?) ones had no climate control. No ABS brakes but did have revised suspension geometry which made the car oversteer more.

Anyway. Mine is the best flavour because it does everything brilliantly so screw you lot. Xenon lights rule.

Ok Dave....thanks.....

So, the one i've spotted isn't an actual "cup" as it's a phase 1....all very confusing..........& in your modest opinion the phase 2 (like yours) is the one to go for....???

Ta

Jon
