Renault build quality and aftercare.

So, one of the girls at work has a 5yr old Renault Clio. She brought it brand new from Renault at Lowestoft. She was on her way to work 3weeks ago and the car cut out. No strange noises just cut out.

Any how the car was purchased from Mitchell’s Renault in Lowestoft. Been serviced on time every time by Mitchell’s in Lowestoft. Been mot’d at Mitchell’s at Lowestoft.

So there verdict having had the car recovered there as it couldn’t be repaired on the side of the road was.

It needs a new engine, obviously it’s out of warranty being 5yrs old so that’s going to be £5k but we can offer you 20% off the cost of of a new engine.

Or we can do you a deal on a new Clio with £300 off. Yes £300 quid.

Where has the customer loyalty gone. And a 5yr old one owner car from new, been serviced by Renault themselves shouldn’t be in a situation like that. I know I wouldn’t be buying a 3yr old Renault ever again.

Your friend has a contract with Mitchells under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Under this act it is unreasonable that the engine needs replaced after 5 years. I suggest your friend takes advice from local Trading Standards or Citizens Advice as to the precise wording and informs Mitchells that they are required to replace the engine at their cost. (Note your friends contract is with Mitchells but they, or your friend, may wish to contact Renault UK to get them to smooth the process and cover the cost). I have used this law several times over many years, originally the sale of Goods Act 1979, and have never had any problem once the supplier is made aware that I know my rights. (they also know my rights but prefer to charge me or sell me a new car).let me know how you get on

This is why the new Alpine won't sell that well in the UK in my opinion. You have to deal with complete cock wombles at the stealerships that know fuck all when it comes to anything car related or mechanical.
I believe the situation is different in france but here it has been a shambles for years.

You don't mention what happened to the engine. I can't imagine it would need to be replaced unless it suddenly lost it's coolant and overheated, or lost it's oil and seized or the cam belt snapped, but the engine can usually be rebuilt quite cheaply after that. Any sudden loss of coolant or oil would show up on the gauges so I can't see that was the case, unless the warning lights were ignored. So I'm baffled!

What did the garage say was wrong with the engine? It's a lousey situation for the lady, but if the engine really is shot, a small, local garage will fit one from a written-off car as the most economical solution.
