removing and painting callipers?

hi everyone, i was going to give painting my callipers a go this weekend but as i dont really know my way round a car is this gonna be a bit tricky? i was planning on removing them to do this but is there anything special i will need other than torx and hex socket set? also do i need to bleed the brakes and refill the fluid? and what are the locking nuts iv read about?
I have found a few posts about this but still have these questions, any advice would be appreciated. cheers, andy :)
 
The hex nut screws are very tight, assuming they have not been off recently. I had to use an impact wrench to loosen one of my front ones as, despite being able to steer the fronts to differnet angles, I was unable to get a decent length breaker bar on them. Maybe if the car was higher of the ground it would be easier. If you intend to remove the callipers completely then yes the brake system will need re filling and bleeding (no bad thing given these cars age now). I think a lot of folks leave the hoses attatched and work on the callipers in situ, it saves a lot of work.
On the rears, check which bolts to undo. there are 4 but only 2 need releasing. I cannot remember which but its no problem to work out when you see it. The torx screw holding the ABS senser on will need removing to access one of the bolts and of course you have the handbrake cable to deal with as well. Beware on the rears as it is a floating caliper and the 2 parts will slide off the pin easily if you are not careful and its easy to damage the rubber seal on the pin if it does come apart.
All in all a lot of work just for paint, I would carry out a full brake overhaul at the same time as it wont be any more work.
remember you are dealing with brakes, if you dont feel competent then leave them alone.
 
thanks for the reply, that does sound a lot of work and like i said i have no experience in cars and really dont wanna balls it up! if i masked off the area to spray i wouldnt need to do any of that i suppose??

look really good mate!did he just take the wheel off and mask off everything around it? i imagine getting them cleaned up is the hardest part with leaving them on?
 
well had a go at painting in situe, harder than i thought and made bit of pigs ear of it [smilie=icon_cry.gif] but this was due to it raining on the wet paint and making it bubbly so texture is poo and it was quite hard to do the masking well! wish brett had done mine for me too, never mind its been a learning curve! :s
 
yeah they look good mate, my finish wasn't too bad apart from some rain bubbles, if i were to do it again think i would buy a kit as it comes wiv all the cleaning and painting gear. oh and get someone else to do it!
 
I got some cheapo caliper paint from halfrauds and that was okay, took a few coats but worked out pretty nice i recon
