Rear Tyre, Dilemma What should I do?!

So, i'm off to the RenaultSport trackday on 21st Aug (I hope!) and I need a new rear tyre (0.5mm left!!).

What do I do? It's a Michelin PS2 that needs replacing, and i've got a Michelin PS1 bought by mistake on the offside rear with a fair bit of life left in it.

I thought I read somewhere that it's bad to have two different makes of tyres on each side, so i'm reluctant to go for a different brand. I've got some relatively new PS2's on the front.

So, with the trackday in mind I reckon 0.5mm is not enough so i'm going to get a new tyre beforehand. Do I:

1. Get a new Michelin PS2 just for the nearside rear.

2. Get two Nang Kang rear tyres and replace both the PS1 and worn PS2?

3. Wait until after the trackday?! But i'm sure that what is left on my tyre is a bit risky though.

Hey Monkey,

One advice never to forget: NEVER put two different tyres on either front or rear, and as for that matter, always replace both at the same time. In France Germany and Holland it is even illegal to drive that way. I don't know about England.

The other thing, there is a huge difference in performance between PS1 and PS2 specially in the wet. If you like to spin a lot, I would advice you to put a PS2 on front and a PS1 on the rear.

I don't know about hang yang or whatever, BUT, what I do know, is that the development of the V6 phase 2 was saved by the development of the Michelin PS2.
At the time there just wasn't a tyre which could hold the car.
Maybe stuff has changed, but I swear by the PS2, and for anybody who wants to know, yes I tested different brands, the closest were Pirelli Pzero semislicks, not offically sold by tyredealers, but dramaticaly low running life.
I've also tested the PS1, but took them of after one drive in the rain.
I don't go with cheap nang yang, chinese or korean brands, I don't want to risk a major tyre blowout at highspeed, I know what kinda research Michelin, Pirellli, Bridestone, and Dunlop put into their proramm. That is the reason why they are priced as they are!
I just don't trust those weird branches.

By the way, you take of 2 to 3 mm on a trackday, easy.

For what its worth having spannered fer many years I always replace both tyres at once and would recommend you do also for the same reason as you wouldn't run different brands, you want the car to handle the same whether turning left or right and under braking or acceleration so this means both tyres must have the same grip and handling characteristics achieved by both having the same tread depth and tyre pattern. Hope this helps.

cheers for your thoughts guys, I can't get the time off work so I won't be going to the Renaultsport trackday after all, looking at Bedford on 14th Oct as a worthy replacement. But it looks like i'll get two new Michelin 2's on the rear then, it seems it's going to be an expensive month!!

PS2 = Pilot Sport 2!! :lol:
