Re: 303 bhp and 241ft/lb ph1

Morning!

Had my car back last week and just wanted to put a post up with reference to the quality of the work done by Scott at SGM. The photos etc are on the way and should be posted shortly ( thanks Tim ) i dont have them yet as Scottie has em! anyway back to the car - MINDBLOWING!!!!
Everthing from the interior through to the engine is cock on. The bulk head ( Ray many thanks again, when are we meeting for beers?) is spanking, fits like a glove and makes the M6 drive up north and back pleasurable to do, also adding a look of class to the standard interior. The flocking on the engine covers and dash really creates a better feel of quality inside the cabin. The seats? The seats are fantastic, both supportive, quality and comfortable on long journeys. Have harnesses in there but also run the pre tensioners for road use.
Uprated AP brakes give you the confidence to push with the car more and actually stop the car properly ( i know the standard brakes are done by ap but they are no where near as good) fully braided hoses and uprated pads also help with a better feel.
Rear end is more planted with the ph2 rear end and the anti roll bar/ custom drop links set up.
KW suspension is expensive to buy, but ive run it on my last three cars and i wouldnt fit anything else.
Custom exhaust system is quiet compared to janspeed, but is just right for my requirements. It makes the required noise when you put youre foot to the boards and doesnt sound like kevs corsa at low speeds!!!!
If you see the manifolds they are a work of art!!!
Refering to noise the v has a all together different tone and engine note. So much so you cant even here the exhaust!!! To cut a long story short it sounds fing sick! Its like having an all together different car.
Driving at low speeds the car is smooth and very tractable( almost normal!) i sat at 75/80 on the m6 no cabin interference and droning. If you put youre foot down it barks very loudly and has a very unique tone - i havent heard another v sound like it. The induction noise at all revs from 2k is mental, it sounds every bit like i would have hoped. The motec map is gradual all through the rev range and even with the cams is mapped not to be " on or off" good delivery of the power all round.( thanks Mark @ Owen developments )
Torque in every gear is far more noticable - saves changing gear as many times [smilie=icon_chef.gif]
A few more bits and bats to finish in January and then will be at the most optimum.
So all in all a unique car built by a unique bloke - cheers Scott ( and of course Rupert ) looking forward to the warmer months with eagerness.
Will post again when the photos are up.
Later on Tim

???? Where did it all go wrong then????

I didn't say anything went, or was wrong. The torque delivery sounds fantastic and that is really all that matters in regards to it. Just interested to know where the torque figure was in the end as per the first post. It is interesting to read about the ££'s spent on a quality NA tune and figures and compare these to what people will achieve with there forced induction efforts. It's an impressive Clio v6, I am not trying to take anything away from that in the slightest.

No not in reference to you. The project went Pete Tong. And dont trust rolling road figures is a recurring theme. Its a guide not a definative fact.

I wouldn't say it went wrong; it just needed TDF to "finish" the mapping (where others struggled)... the final spec was:

Engine.
2946cc 24 valve v6 with standard ph2 bottom end, AWT sleeved modified cylinder heads including valve seats, port polish matched - rebuild internal plenham areas, custom cut engine gaskets, high lift Newman cams, PH2 modified inlet manifold, Porsche throttle body, larger grey injectors, pipercross viper induction kit, Torque technics ceramic coated custom six branch tubular manifold with sports cat and back box, Motec M600 piggy back ecu with all dual band. Mocul oil cooler and oil breather kit, Samco hoses and connectors.
Mapping and dyno work TDF Kimbolton Cambridge- 285bhp and 240ft/lb.

Sounds about right with that spec. Pretty much exactly the same spec as Patchalls and exactly the same power. I thought the car in question had a shit load of money thrown at the motor. Are you sure that was the final spec? That's just a ph2 engine with played about heads and cams. Nice as it is I might just add though.

The motor is one area that i woudn't footer about with on the V6...The costs don't outweigh the benefits...or rather they don't to me...Coils and athetics would be my preferred option!

You'd be suprised at the difference a few choice and cost effective modification make Ali. However, coilovers are probably the single best thing you could do as you point out.

I personaly think the costs have been blown out of all proportions over the last couple of years. I've never seen definative prices of how much things cost to do. Yet after a few weeks research, I find you can get a fully sorted bottem end for less than £2k. Anyway, back to the subject. 285bhp would be VERY nice in a ph1. With the ligher shell I'm sure it would be great.

It's like you have said before Brett, there isn't really any smoke and mirrors mechanically to tune a V6 engine over anything else. The issue as I see it, especially now I am looking at the Bosch Motronic ME7.5 in my Audi S3 which is the same as the Vee, is the sophisticated ECU and complexity of correct mapping with it's fly-by-wire torque request design. I have dug out some technical reference documentation and there are an incredible number of 'maps' in the ECU and tuners often only touch one or two and each tend to have a different set of maps they play with.

My S3 has a GTRS turbo, front mount, decats, 3inch system etc. and has been mapped and fitted with an aftermarket boost controller added aswell as other things disconnected, all to get it working for out and out power - and this tends to be the norm to 'fool' the ECU. I have done a lot of studying and decided to remove the aftermarket boost controller, restored the factory boost control device and plumbing and the car runs so much smoother, especially on part throttle, OK with a slight loss in the severity of boost delivery but the car is still superb and fast.

If you are gonna mechanically tune the Vee using tried and trusted conventional means, IMO I would now do what others are doing and ditch the OEM ECU and fit something simpler and easier to map (relatively speaking) like the Motec.

An long overdue update...
The Carbon fibre spoiler fitted to VE02VEE was faulty. Russo will be familiar with the problem. In essence there were tiny perforations in the form which causes the lacquer to lift and turn milky.
I had been waiting for a Ph2 type CF spoiler from Adrian in Holland - but to no avail.
With few options left, I've had the original CF spoiler primer filled and black gloss painted.
It will match the 18'' gloss black OZ wheels going on soon. Some shots from today.

Is that a bespoke spoiler?

You going to bring this to Origine RS?

The spoiler was a CF trophy-inspired creation of 'infamous' Ray - who was a humorous but abrasive former owner on here (possibly a smoke-screen to avoid being exposed as James' closet lover.)
There was a similar attached to Keir's when he bought it - didn't look quite right on his OEM Lunar. Arguably, it looks dodgy on mine - but it's a good OEM- tonic!

It has just been delivered to THA for storage. (Thank you for the nod - Dulan).
It will be transported to SGM for some TLC shortly (once the AY has been tended to).

I would love to share the VE02VEE experience with you guys. It's one crazy MF!

I have booked accommodation for origine, but it's going to be a challenge for me to bring either Vee this time round...

The spoiler doesn't look too on your Ph1.
Good, so you managed to get a spot at THA - easier in the summer I guess.

Shame that you aren't able to bring either to Origine RS. Would have been a great opportunity to get the Ph1 on track and explore its capabalities (and limits). Trailer it using the Landy?

I don't disagree with your comment regarding the spoiler.

It is quite lairy - but is quite apt for this Vee.
Ironically, the former owner had a trophy ducktail spoiler beforehand - which is probably where it's returning to.

I need Mr Russo to point me in the right direction...
