Prototype Mk1 on PH

Car sold today to a specialist dealer (wouldn't tell me who) . Going to be kept in a showroom and a BIG price tag of over £18k is going to be put on it..

A shame tbh..

Not sure if it's worth 18K - but guess if the right person is out there and it is a one off then good on them!

Get a phase 2 Piers!

Not quite sure how professional the ad looks with spelling and grammer

Is that a joke? :s

No joke, was my opinion of how the ad looked from a car trader/dealer and as a potential customer - not judging anyone or academic ability if that's what you might be getting at ... A good impression is something people often use to make decisions (rightly or wrongly), like appearance at a job interview ...

Only problem there is a Mk2 costs me an extra £600 on insurance! :( So a Mk2 will all depend on what I can get for my car and how much the Mk2 is.

Would much rather pay £15k+ for a very special vee with 12,000 miles (just worn in miles) on the clock than the same for a ph2 with more miles and less going for it. Can't even argue Ph2's have better interiors than that particular car as it was pretty special and original from the factory. Am completly gutted I never managed to sell mine in time but in the same breath glad I'm still in happy vee ownership.

This will be a good benchmark for testing the market then ... if it sells then it pushes the price point for a Mk1 (albeait a special one) ... if it doesn't then it might suggest that it is priced too high or that the particular buyer required for this car is not there ...

My view on this car is that it really needs to be kept it pristine and lower mileage to maintain it's value and desirability otherwise it becomes diluted with the 'average' even though it has a unique heritage ... as I see it, the difficulty with Vees is that it is a little unknown as to how 'classic' these cars will become in years to come and what will be the factors in future which really start to differentiate the market over and above condition and mileage ...

Adding to this ... It's easy if you have the disposable income to buy the more unique and expensive cars and keep them pristine but for most of us this isn't possible so in a sense you may as well have one that fits your situation and just enjoy it :approve:

I would have been interested and would have paid up to £10K max and 'I think' fall into the mad Renault collector category.

For anyone hoping to make a fast buck with the car, firstly they need to remember it's RHD and secondly maybe they should have been to the Coys auction at Autosport on Saturday 15th.

The results are still not up on their website yet and for good reason, bar one or two exceptions, and bearing in mind it is just after Christmas it looks like the bottom may have just fallen out of the classic car market 80's style.

Those that were there will know what I mean but as a taster:

Genuine escort mexico historic rally car estimate £40-£50K SOLD £15 or 16K
RS500 Black top estimate £28K SOLD £18K
RS500 Moonstone top estimate £37 SOLD £24 or 25K
Porsche 911 Targa '73 SOLD £5.5K
Lotus Carlton. £13K engine rebuild. Top estimate £20K. SOLD £11.5 or £12K
Aston Martin Vantage FIA eligible Le Mans Classic. Top estimate £70K SOLD £54K
355 Spider Top estimate £40K SOLD £27K

Buy of the day IMO Ferrari 288GTO re-creation. Proper job based on 308 as per original. 90K+ conversion . 28K+ engine work. 7K+ service. Turbo. 500BHP on dyno. Top estimate £65K SOLD £31K. Meant the seller only got £27K after commission. Must have been crying.

Also the best most famous RS200 the Guiness world record EVO 850+ BHP car estimated upto 130K 'only' made just over 100K IIRC with spares. So that's the ceiling for these now. Look out for some bargain standard 250BHP cars soon...

I was looking at the Spider CUP car top estimate £16K sold £12.5

You triggered me to look at the RS200 situation Stephen and I came across this ...

RS200 thread inc R2500 comments

So maybe all is not what it seems ...

Martin

Lot 214 E773 MMM RS500 sold for £22k plus commission (15%), too much bling on it
Lot 213 E691 MMF RS500 £18K plus commission, bit tired around the edges and paintwork not great.
Lot 255 Escort Mexico £16,000 plus com.
Lot 258 Withdrawn, apparently mechanical probs.
Lot 201 RS200 8K plus comm. again looks better in photos, overspray, detailing etc.

Interesting link Martin.

Looking at the results on that thread looks like the better RS500 went for even less than I thought and yes the auctioneer definitley said sold, that's what suprised me on a lot of the cars on the day, they had no reserve.

Looks like the RS200 seller lost bundles taking into account the work and commission.

And I still can't believe how far out Coys estimate was on the Mexico. They valued it £34K above the sale price...

Resession springs to mind though and its not going to be around forever. I'd take the classic/collectors car market prices with a pinch of salt at the minute. Its hardly a great time for anyone to spend money on anything, let alone on weekend cars. Sub £15K for a Mk1 Mexico is a joke to be fair. You couldn't restore a car for less than that. Probably a sh1te auction or nobody having the balls to buy. The same goes for other cars sold in that auction. I've got an early 1960 Mini with shed loads of race history and I know in a few years it'll be worth a fortune. I see 2 very rough 1964 cars go for £31,000 the other month. Was a case of making one good one out of two bad ones but they still went for mega bucks. I'm also an avid Audi UR Quattro fan but sooner or later I won't be able to afford one. Give it a year or two and things will pick up for definate. I'm not saying this because I've got a ph1 but in my opinion, the first of the mark always ends up being more expensive than the second inline. An Audi S2 for instance is a MUCH better car van the UR. However, the UR's are much more expensive. Its the same with 99% of all improved on models.

I reckon the TWR car will go for top dollar. If it doesn't now, it will definatly in the future.

Probably a sh1te auction

It was Coys, so probably the most respected along with Bonhams. Certainly very well publicised. Maybe wrong time of year, would like to have compared with last years results to see if they were low also but those have been taken offline. Will make sure I'm a registered bidder for 2012 just in case there is a repeat ;)

the first of the mark always ends up being more expensive than the second inline

Often but not always. Depends on success / reception / special edition of the specific model. Renault examples:

Second dearer

1100 Gordini worth less than 1300 Gordini
GTA worth less than Le Mans
GTA worth less than A610
R26 worth less than R26R
1100 A110 worth less than 1600 A110
182 Cup worth less than 182 Trophy
5GTT worth less than 5GTT Raider
21T worth less than 21Q

First dearer

255 Clio worth more than 230 Clio (at the moment!)
4cyl A310 worth more than V6 A310
5T(1) worth more than 5T2
Williams 1 worth more than Williams 2 & 3

Anyone think of any more examples?

I reckon the TWR car will go for top dollar
It did AFAIK...
