Pre Production V6 Phase 2

Rex

New Member
Hi to all other V6 owners out there,

I hope this is the right place to post this being new to Clio forums, looking for info.

I have had in my possession now for some years a Pre-production LHD V6 Clio that has never been road registered either in the UK (where I bought it) or in France (where I live). For the last few years I have driven it legally on my French trade plates but I have since sold my garage and can no longer use it on the public highway. According to the VIN sticker and chassis number it is number 7 and was fabricated April 2001, yet the engine, brakes, wheels, body and trim all correspond to a phase 2, as do the performance.

I'm basically looking to hear from anyone who can give me information on who actually built the V6 (I'm told the phase two's were UK built?) in my mission to get her road registered without it ending up on a Q reg as currently proposed by the DVLA. Renault France nor Renault UK recognize the car, despite it clearly being one and having a genuine Renault VIN.....

Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide concrete info.

Regards,

A PM to GPH on here may help. Graeme is the EX PR manager of Renault UK from V6 time. He has lots of onfo and may be able to help.

Wow, that was quick thanks.

Unfortunately when I tried that "You are not authorised to view the member list or profiles." I guess I'm too new here [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

Really interested on what the dvla do, would be terrible with a q plate as it may give the impression it's a replica.

Can you put a private plate on the car instead? Not sure how the whole thing works

Unfortunately you have to keep the Q private plate not allowed I'm told. When I see all the Q reg Land Rovers on UK roads that are really 2012 models running on an ex-army logbook from the seventies I guess it makes sense!

Hi Rex

Ive PM'ed Graeme (Ex Renault guy) to highlight your thread. Lets see what he thinks.

Id also do some more home work on the Q plate thing. Im sure I had a pre-pro NSX when I worked for Honda UK that got registered years after it was made and that wasnt on a 'Q'. It may just be a 'computor says no' person you spoke to!

Hi :) Become a club member. This is probably best, most friendliest car forum you will ever visit so it would be the best thing you could do. Its possibly similar to Stephen Dells 'is it a ph1.5' vee. Have you checked with the French boys @ v6passion?

Thinking about it when a Jap import car comes here it just has the letter relating to the date the car was made on the reg.

Id say nothing about pre-pro to DVLA, it will just confuse them!

Haha, Ian, mate you don't know the half of it. Actually the DVLA are fantastic compared to the administration here in France - they make Herculean attempts to stop you at all costs buying a car (or anything else for that matter) outside of France....

I've met someone who registered some preproduction 2 door Sierra Cosworth's that were destined for rally from the factory, yet somehow found there way back to the road - apparently I need as much info as I can get, being at least 900 miles from the nearest SVA centre....

That's the problem I'm having - no dating certificate from Renault available, despite "Avril 2001" clearly indicated on the Renault VIN.

Thanks for your help..

I haven't to be honest, but I'll check them out. I want to register in UK not France, they've recently discovered a vile invention called the "speed camera" over here!

Whereabouts are you in Essex? I'm from the NE originally but my UK end of the business is in Battlesbridge these days :)

Any pics of the car, it's going to be a very good read , and to see how you get on with it, hope all turns out ok for you

Be interested to hear how you get on. You have come to the right place plenty of helpful people on here.

Any photos you can upload would like to see it :)

Thanks for the welcome and your messages. Here she is.

All the plastic trim was missing around the engine cover so I had some heat and noise proof carpet made to measure as it wasn't very nice without.

The tray is also missing from the front bonnet should anyone have one for sale - Renault can dream on if they think they'll be getting a new one out of me at that price...

Might be worth Stephen Dell coming in on this one to see if his Mk2 prototype pre-dates this one and where it sits in the scheme of things. IIRC Stephens car is LHD chassis number 1, with a number of subtle differences from the production car and a host of additional temp sensors around the engine bay - presumably for data capture necessary to refine the prototype and materials.

I haven't really had the chance to have a true commercial version for 24 hours to have a good comparison to see what should and shouldn't be there, just a quick track day instance when parked side by side. The only thing I've found out of the ordinary mechanically so far is the inlet manifold looks bespoke or t least modified - and is running a TB from a Porsche Cayenne. I only know this because I had problems with it a year or so ago - my friend has a Renault dealership here in France and it is certainly not the right TB as we ordered what should be on a PH2 from Renault and it was completely different.

I know everyone here loves these motors but doesn't everyone else find Renault's choice of gearbox shocking? Perhaps mine hasn't the correct ratios but it is lubriciously long in the teeth, the synchro has gone in fourth @ 20,000km and for pete's sake, why oh why hasn't it got an LSD as standard??? What were they thinking?
