Phase2 Eating Batteries...Arrrgh!!!!

Just mindful of the chap who posted here last week saying only his Clio was "dead" but giving no specific information [smilie=icon_eek.gif] Remember that one???

I think I have the same problem....

The day before I sold 166 (Phase2) last week, I went to move it around the drive. Unlocked the car, checked the water level replaced the engine covers, got in, tried to start. All the lights came up on the dash with the ignition on like normal, turned the key and "click" and then nothing.

It had been driven 20 miles earlier that morning and the alternator was working OK. I checked it.

Jumped it off another car, and saw it had a Renault battery in it. I assumed it was the original 6 year old battery and so had it replaced the same day. No further problems and sold the car.

My new one collected last week (132 Phase2) had a brand new battery fitted by the seller as I watched. A couple of days ago (after driving it for 10 miles a few hours before) I went to it and had the SAME problem!. Jumped it, the car started, alternator working, and the didn't have the same problem again....Until this evening.

I started and moved the car earlier today. Went to move it back again earlier this evening.

Put the key in. Turned the ignition on. Dash lights came on as usual. Turned the key...."Click" and nothing.

Turned it off again. Tried again. Starter motor turned over, more slowly than usual, but wouldn't start as the flaming immobiliser had come on arghhhh!

Tried again. "Click" Nothing. No lights, no clock, nothing.

Turned the ignition completely off. The CD Changer started to do it's thing, so I had another go.

Turned the ignition on. The lights on the dash came up bright and almost immediately there was click somewhere on the passenger side I think, and at the same time the ignition lights went dim. Naturally when I tried to start, "Click" and nothing.

Tried to jump start from another car, but I only managed to get the same dash lights on and a click when trying to start the engine.

When you try to lock it, there is only the faintest of clicks from the locking but it doesn't actually lock, and although the immobiliser light is flashing away, I have summised that the battery is flat.

Any ideas???

As I say, this is a brand new battery less than a week old. The wrong battery perhaps. I'll check in the morning.

The only thing that immediately stands out is, as I am sure you know, if you unlock the car and quickly open the door, that tends to set the alarm off in Renaults.

Doesn't happen with this.

Then Saturday I noticed that when you lock the car, you can here the faintest of faint long beeeeeeeeep (you really have to listen hard) that seems to go on for about 2 minutes. Is this normal?

One theory I came up with is that the alarm volume has been turned right down (if this is even possible of course) and the alarm has been going off and running the battery flat....Of course, you'd never know as it's only audible to dogs at the mo.

Nonsense theory or something in it? Waddaureckon???

Any help gratefully received....I forgot to take up the AA's £10 annual Homestart offer the mailed me! :violin:

Cheers in advance.

Simon

Went to it today and

The proper battery is quite a meaty affair. 65AH 720A

I suppose the battery is all connected tightly etc?

It is connected as it should be....But I reckon it might just be the wrong battery (given the lack of anything else obvious), so I'll check, if necessary replace and update tomorrow.

The battery is showing a green light though....So was the Renault battery in 166 when it was presenting the same problem :s

get someone to do a discharge test on the battery, most discount shops offer this service free, sounds like a buckled plate causing a short under load. if its a new batt take it back to the supplier. cant see the problem being caused by having the wrong battery unless its dramatically undersized from the original. or of crap manufacture from bradistan.
NOTE, DISCHARGE TEST: this is a test where the battery is breifly put under a very heavy load (100 + amps) and the voltage noted, voltage should stay above 9 volts ish, this does depend of course on size and capacity, if the voltage reads 12v then drops to 6 or 7 volts under load this would indicate a kippered battery (worn or buckled plates) good luck.

OFF TOPIC
This reminds me of the two tramps that the police arrested for eating fireworks and drinking battery acid................

they charged one and let the other one off.

I am not technically minded at all so please don’t laugh at my suggestion!! …. But could it be a connection to the solenoid?

I only suggest this as I just had a similar problem last week on my “run about” Focus. I went to go out in it the other morning and it was a pig to start. I thought it might have been the battery dying so I took it for a drive, parked up and went shopping. I thought the drive should have put some charge in the battery as it was a trip up the motorway but it was still a pain to get it started for the journey home.

A few days later I went to go out in it again and it was dead - there was absolutely nothing. It unlocked on the central locking from the key but no lights displayed on the dash and no noises when I turned the key.
Luckily a few days later my dad came down to see me and he’s very handy with cars! We tried to jump it from his car but it still wouldn’t start.
Then we decided to tow it and try to bump start it - this worked immediately! We took it for a drive, left it running for a while, then I said to him to turn it off and see if it starts again…. NO the bl**dy thing wouldn’t! It was still completely dead.
Anyway he had his toolkit with him so got down underneath the car, turned a nut/bolt or something on the solenoid and it started immediately. It had worked itself loose by about ¼ of a turn!! [smilie=icon_cheers.gif]
I used the car to go away last weekend and it has been absolutely fine since, I didn’t need the new battery I had ordered for it!

Of course this could be nothing to do with your problem but I thought I’d post it just in case….. Hope you get it sorted!

Think the battery was just too small for the job. Had a nice new T100 fitted today......Tomorrow it's an 0445 start to the Eurotunnel and then the usual monthly trip (but first time in a V6) to Berlin just in time for G&Ts at dusk.....or will it be a recovery truck back home again??? Wish me luck!

Its two day drive surely! Its a mammoth distance! From here to Dortmund is the same distance Dortmund to Berlin!! Ps Good luck! :)

Nooo! [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

Berlin is 8 to 9 hours from Calais. Once you're in Germany it's the A2 most of the way with no speed limit in most places so everyone poodles along at about 100 to 110mph. It's a doddle in a day, but you'll need a couple of drinks and a good night's sleep the other end!

As for the dreaded-Dortmund, I go past there to get to Berlin. It's only just over the Dutch Border in the Ruhrgebeit, about 4 hours from Calais. Berlin's twice the distance further along the A2.

I have some input on this as ... you guessed it ... my Vee has started to start poorly when hot ...

The battery indicator was green but when tested it was kaput ... but wait - there is more ... a new battery, in fact 2 new batteries, did NOT fix the issue but merely disguised it ...

When VERY hot the starter turns slowely due, I now know, to a combination of increased electrical resistance and a degrading starter ... a big battery can help but the fundamental issue is typically starter (and in other cases faulty earths or wiring) ... when the engine cools down all is fine again ...

I am playing safe and looking to replace the starter rather than risk any starting issues ...

My car had water ingress into the exposed end of the positive battery cable. Right at the battery end. A good garage can check the voltage drop across the cables to check. Quick easy fix. Worth trying.

Yes peter, had the old battery checked and it was fubared... connections checked too... two new batteries didn't resolve the issue... car starts fine today now things are nice and cooled, but research and a couple of technicians reckon its the starter so best to just get it done I guess :)
