how easy is this and what are the tricks to doing it,looking tonight at one, looks not bad except rear bolts?

hi undo engine mounts from sub frame and lift engine then is poss to get at rear bolts and remove sump. very tight and tricky but poss you may well throw a few sockets and ratchets around lol

hi dave

a good tip is to let the oil drain out first LOL
si21
but on a more serious not not quite as easy as it sounds undo the engine mounts then using preferably an engine hoist raise the engine up dont forget to disconect the top intercooler hose and any other item which might get pulled whilst raising the engine Alternatively i used a peice of timber 4" X 4" on the bottom main pully an alternator bracket and jacked her up from there the block cant slip out as its sanwiched between the engine and front cross member but please be carefule if it slips off the jack and you have your hand inbetween the sump and subframe "OUCH" big time youl have to try n position the jack so that its not in your way you also need the car high enough to get under as well and a big enuff jack to get the hight but not in the way Hence the 4" block of wood helps in the jacking hight dep then carefull spanner away PUT YOUR SUMP BACK ON WITH A BLOODY GASKET!!! please dont go thru my heart break LOL

an expert at sumps all of a sudden LOL
si21

Sump

If you have and engine crane, air ratchet, socket extentions with a UJ and the right torx bits/short reach 16mm its piss easy.

Slightly harder without the air ratchet.

Complete toss without the right torx and UJ.

Don't forget when re-attaching to use a dry gasket or you run the risk of a si21/leejsa stylee oil pressure catastrophe

On a ph1 you need to take out the 2 16mm bottom bellhousing bolts dont forget!!! And don't over-torque the bolts on reassembly.....

WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD DEEM IT SENSIBLE AND REASONABLE TO REFIT THE SUMP WITHOUT THE GASKET??????

JESUS H CHRIST...........Wheres that 'head scratching' smiley again?

'Paul, when we put that box in later, I think we'll leave the shafts out yeah, see how long that lasts' lolololol

"WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD DEEM IT SENSIBLE AND REASONABLE TO REFIT THE SUMP WITHOUT THE GASKET??????"

That would be me then :D

Silicon sealer is a beautiful thing when used with discression and awareness.

And it's cheaper than gaskets.

(Hey, we were in a rush and i was going on the first french trip 48 hours later)

cone

silicones sh#t for sealing anything near oil
should know i'm a conservatory fitter with boxes of the stuff
It's always tempting but it never works

LOL

Yep, it was fine for a year now its weeping a bit.
I Used B+Q's finest poo brown outdoor stuff. Maybe i'll splash out and make a gasket out of cornflake box next time....
