Ph1 to Ph2 airbag connections

I have just fitted a 182 Trophy steering wheel (very similar to Ph2 but without CC) to my Ph1 to replace an aftermarket Ripspeed steering wheel.

There is orange one airbag cable:

This would normally connect to the centre of the Ph1 airbag:

On the Ph2 airbag there are TWO connectors. An orange 2 pin connector on the bottom and a green 2 pin connector on the top. I have connected to the orange connector. Is this right or do I need both? The airbag light is still on. Have I done it correctly and the light just needs resetting with a can clip?

I've been considering this mod also, I've put a Sparco wheel on it but i'm not happy with it. ( it's a 330mm wheel and it blocks the dials however i sit )

I'd get the old wheel recovered, but not also not happy with the egg like airbag sticking out in the middle.

I've checked Autodata and can find nothing on this airbag setup ( just the ph1 setup ) & just spent an hour odd looking on CS.

From what i can gather, They are running about with it not connected, I can't find one post about how to do it.

Plenty of posts but they all end in a blank.

If you have had the ignition on at any point with it disconnected the fault will be logged and will stay on till cleared with a scan tool. ( it won't go out on it's own )

I'll keep digging... would be a nice one to pull off.

i did this to replace my ph1 wheel and no the airbag light will never go out. I have just changed back to a newly refurbished ph1 wheel.

also dont think the light can be reset as mike @ rentech tried

You could stick a 3.3ohm resistor in the orange plug, This would fool the airbag ECU into thinking that the airbag was still there.

The light will go out ( with a reset ), but it will never deploy the wheels airbag, but would allow the rest to fire if needed.

this is how i understand how it works on a phase 2,the clio the airbag has a high and low pressure firing system hense 2 airbig connectors.

Ths is controlled by a little mirco switch on the driver seat runners, if you have the seat well forward the switch is activated which means the air bag only deploys on a low pressure setting, so it does not smash the skin off your face, with the seat in a back postion the switch allows high pressure deployment of the airbag.

So what you have on a mark 1 is only a single pressure deployment system. so you need to connect the mark 1 wires to the high pressure deployment side of the phase 2 airbag. dont know which side it is though.

Doing this should not result in the airbag light being on unless the phase 2 airbag has a lower or higher resistance the the mark 1type, the spare connection on the airbag is dormant, i think, i do think they interconnect in the airbag but i could be wrong on that.

0ther reasons it maybe on are the clock spring connector behind the steering wheel that has the airbag connections in it should NEVER be turned in either direction when the steering wheel is off as this will result in the wires breaking inside it when you turn the wheel to full lock and then there is no airbag connection hense the airbag light comes on.
Or the igninition was switched on when the airbag was diconnected but it should go off again when it see the airbag once reconnected.

PLEASE DO NOT USE A VOLT / OHM METER THE READ THE RESITANCE OF THE AIRBAG AS THE 9V BATTERY INSIDE THE METER COULD SET OFF THE AIRBAG, UNLIKEY BUT POSSIBLE.

Hi i have done the same on the steering wheel thing and when i had an mot i asked the garage to reset the serv and airbag light. Thing is the renault diagnostic gear used didnt reconise the new steering wheel part number to the ph 1 car as they were not compatable. So he could not reset the light . Only other option is to remove the bulb, but i still would like a renault wheel with an airbag with out using the old bubble type.

Jim, As above you can add a resistor to the ph1 airbag connection that will fool the car into thinking it's connected.


The light will reset but of course the steering wheel air bag ( god forbid ) will never fire in a bump.


My understanding is if the light is on, NO airbags or pretensioner will fire until reset. So best solution so far.
