petrol fumes

hi guys , had my vee 255 for three days now , im loving the car .
when im hard on the throttle thru the gears i m getting a slight whiff of the shell vpower from the engine , is this normal ? i would understand if it was, seeing as the motor is vertually in the cabin with you .. just thought id ask ? the cars got 14 months of warranty left so no worries about taking it in .

Hi Soin,
I isn't normal, even with the engine cover taken off.

There is one major area where some fuel could leak (big word)
the fuellines are attached with plastic quickjoints, this would be the first thing I would take a look at.
there are three on top of the fueltank, (access, by taking of the cover on the luggagestorage behind the seat) two on top of the engine righthandside on the fuelrails, three on the accumulator on top of the cambeltcover. Also take a closer look at the fuelpressure pickup next to the accumulator.

no de cats, the car is totally standard . looks like i ll be making use of the warranty sooner than expected , cheers for the feedback guys

Sounds a bit silly. But it could be the petrol pump lid. I had to put a new pump on mine and didn't quiet get the screw lid on properly.

The fumes were really strong when driving.

same happened to me too

i take it youre on about the filler cap , i ll go check t out ..it did happen to me on a 911 causing fuel to run out of the overflow tube , which in turn deposits it on the road just behind the front lh wheel ,, which then in turn causes the rear wheels to come in contact with the spilt fuel and your cars rear end starts sliding about all over the road ... it happened to me en route to cornwall one time. 20 miles into the journey , so i about turned and nursed it back to my mechanics about 30 mph all the way . nervously explaining to him that i thought the rear end of the car had collapsed , he checked the filler cap which was on skew wiff ..    how embarassing .. with all that one would assume id have learnt my lesson .. i ll nip out and check cheers guys

I had a whiff of fumes a while back, was noticable when the window was down, estasblished in the end it was coming from the filler cap.

Just off topic where abouts in the South west you from SOIN?

Has anyone tried to check the above? If so do we have a how to guide? WIth pics hopefully.

I have a strong smell of fuel at the moment that wasnt there originally. When I filled up at the petrol station 2 tank fulls ago I noticed that I put too much in and the overflow just dumped the excess fuel on the forecourt. I thought maybe some had gotten into the car and caused the smell buts it seems like there is a fresh smell. So need to investigate further.

Any suggestions?

Checked this morning and can still smell it :s

Im hoping its not serious or expensive - I have a good mechanic at hand who can fix anything just need to tell him what to fix.

So come on guys, answers on a postcard please :D
