performance filter .....to buy or not to buy

Having read a lot of posts on here regarding fitting a performance air filter I am still in 2 minds whether its worth the investment for my standard vee.the noise of the engine alone is crisp however having experienced an induction kit on my vx220 turbo and my m3, I'm finding it hard to resist. Will I see any change whatsoever in performance?? Also will I hear the raspy noise I would expect?? I have also been reading up on the debate regarding the power output of a vee 255. The car certainly feels like its producing that sort of figure by the way it pulls, or should I say push but stats seem to suggest otherwise. It appears that in a drag race a vee would struggle to pull away from say a clio 197. How can there be such a discrepancy in what Renault claim to be the output and what actually is?? Obviously a few bhp here ;) and there can be accounted for but nearly 50 bhp?? Cheers ;)

Personally i think they are worth it for the noise. I had a pipercross and it sounded great! I seriously doubt it had any benefit performance wise though. Maybe a bhp or 2 at most, could also of equally lost a bhp or 2 by fitting it though.

I wouldn't worry about bhp figures, power to weight the cars are quite similar hence not really being able to pull away from a 197, the vee will eventually pull on it as you get to higher speeds.

Renault bhp figures seem to be out equally across the Clio range, none of them seem to make it's claimed bhp figures either.

Agree - driving with just the passenger windown down hearing the side vent sucking in air sounds awesome. A really low down grunty growl!

Not sure on price but they are fairly easy to install - bit of a pig gettign all the covers off and getting hose connected.

Where do you get this 50bhp discrepency?
If you're thinking about Spike's quoted figure of 207bhp...that was at the wheels, not the flywheel.
Renault quote 255ps at the flywheel which is about 252bhp.
Spike's 207 bhp at the wheels converts approximately to 246bhp at the flywheel, so 246 against 252 is not so bad.

Think there is a bit of confusion to marks post i think he means that it should pull comfortably from a 50bhp less clio but stats say it doesnt. I have had a 197 and 253bhp ph1 and the vee is alot quicker lower down the revs but when using the higher revs its where the modern clio comes alive, but it would still slowly get left behind.
Dont forget like duncan says the vee is a fat bugger so PTW isnt that much better

All this bhp talk is useless unless you have some base figures to go against, this post is one of the best reasons to sign up for the dyno day, go with a std filter and have a run, then fit panel or induction kit and go again. simples.
i am sure at whicever venue there will be plenty of hands to make light work of fitting one or the other, what do you lot say?

Hi Alex I'd be interested as I could do a rolling road test on pipercross, bmc and a pannel filter which I have. That way we'd know what's best :)

It's worth it for the noise alone!!! One of the best/cheapest mod's i made!

Cough** Suckered into a wee blast!
