Oil and Sump question

G

Guest

I've been looking for some silkolene oil for my car, but I can only find 5w-40 and 10w - 50...Just looked in the history of the car and it's normally had 10w-50 put into it. Is this Oil too thick? Should i use another Brand that does 10w- 40, or will 5w - 40 be okay?

Also just been flicking through the good old haynes and it says I will need 3.5 litres if I have a steel sump and 4.2 litres if I have an aluminium, how do I know which sump I have.

Thanks

Harry

hi mate...

5w 40w will be fine. if irs a 16v it will have an alloy sump

ally sump will have vanes on it where a steel one wont. or you could just use a magnet, magnets don't stick to alloy. 10/40 is best on a valver 10/50 is used on diesels.

my car needs 6.2l oil?? how come you got the either 3.5 or 4.2?

Not sure bud, thats what is says in the Manual on these cars, so i'll stick to that ballpark figure.

Thanks for the Reply Neil, Need to go order some oil now :)

i was at the reno dealer and asked about it since don't have the manual for the car.. and they recomended 5w-30 full synthetic oil and said that 6.2liters is needed :( 4liter would suite me better since oil is quite expensive

Haynes says 3.5l (excluding the filter)

Filter Capacity is 0.2l (other clios are 0.5l ??)

Min and max levels on the dipstick is 0.6l.

Owners manual quotes 6.2l with a filter change.

Old service bills I have range from 5 to 6.5l put into the car.

would 5 litres be enough then? don't want to choke the engine with too much oil...or have too little...

I always put 6.2 l in my valver, and its defo not got a willy lump in it

It will by crimbo tho

5 litres fills my willy lump to 3/4's on the dipstick.

10w-40 is fine, dont waste your money on 5w-40. Its better to change the oil more regularly than it is to stick mega super duper oil in.

this is confusing.. i had put in 6.2liter when i got the oil+filter changed... then when the oil gauge gets close to zero i fill up with 1liter and everything seems to work just fine..
