Not bad for a Skoda..........

.....they appear to be seriously good cars: 330,860 miles and counting!

According to HM, the "Inside was like new.......Only 4 years old & on original clutch, just the water pump has been replaced. Makes you wonder why people get so panicky as soon as mileage approaches 100k."

Anybody owned a vehicle that had done as many, or more, miles? Have owned a couple (of Porsches) that had more than 100,000 miles on the odometer - this was back in the days when they were driven as they should be, and one did not have to worry about values and the expenses if one happens to have an argument with another solid object (yep, wrote off my first 911, so been there and done it).

My dad has two volvos,

850 tdi estate done 300,000 miles on a P reg this coukd run again but has gearbox fault!

760 turbo done 200,000 on B reg this would run but it’s parked up!

1988 Peugeot 205 XRAD van sold at 200+k and, when last seen was still going strong with over 400k on it! Still on original engine, clutch only done at about 300k! regular oil, filters and belts!

An old chum of mine, Brain Buckland, is known as The Elan man for his exploits in his old Lotus Elan. He's also written the bible on the 1960s Elan, some 700 pages on how to restore the cars.

His knowledge has come from working on them for more than 50 years, and he has driven his current Elan, a 1967 S3 Coupe, continuously since 1969.

As I'm sure you know, Elans are fragile, prone to breaking down and need constant attention, but that's only if you don't know how to look after them!

Brian has now completed just over 910,000 miles in this Elan, and is hoping to make it to 1,000,000 before he has to give up driving. It's still his everyday car, and last year he covered nearly 20,000 miles. he hasn't got far to go at this rate!

I took this photo of his rather tatty Elan back in 2007,when it only had just over 800,000 miles on the clock. It's since been re-painted and looks like a new car again.

I can’t beat Mark’s epic story. I’ve a good pal has an ‘09 Civic diesel on 270k... still going strong. Isn’t the moon 300k?

I think if I was tasked with travelling similar mileage - I’d want to spend time in more salubrious surroundings. Maybe an E class with massage seats? :)

The moon is 239,000 miles (ish)

My Volvo S60 D5 (more commonly know as Frank the Tank) has just shy of 224,000 miles of which I have done 103,000 in the last six years or so. No plans to give it up yet, I service it to schedule and had a new OE clutch and DMF at 204k before I took the family to EuroDisney in it. Great motor!

What struck me further about this particular Skoda is that it is only 4 years old so that's on average 82,715 miles a year! Granted most of those miles would have been covered on motorways, which would not put much strain on the clutch and gearbox, except perhaps the top gear/final cog. However, what about wheel bearings, CV joints etc?

Wow, that kind of usage is from another world Mark! Brian Buckland's book seems like the one to have if one is looking to restore one of these cars......

One of my ex-colleagues has owned an Elan 2+2 130 for a number of years and is looking to give it a complete overhaul, so if he doesn't it already, I will forward your post above.

My Cossie had nearly 180,000 miles on it when I sold it about 15 years ago! I must have put on about 100,000 miles over the course of 8 years of ownership. It still went and handled great then :)
