No spark 1995 R19 1.8 8v

Hi guys,
I need a little help,
I have a Renault 19 1.8 8v convertible which has no spark from the coil.
I have ignition power and power on cranking but I cannot see any earth input.
It is a 2 wire coil both wires are white,
I cannot find an ignition module so I am presuming that the ecu controls the earth on this model.
I also believe I cannot hear a fuel pump priming when ignition is on or cranking.
Does anyone have any wiring diagrams for this car or any ideas in what to check?
Any help would be very much appreciated as I am hitting a wall when trying to find any information on this car..

@Neal R19 is the best person to ask.

Check the crank sensor, if thats goosed then you wont have a trigger signal to the ECU and it wont ask the coil to fire.
Hi Dave,
It has a new sensor already but I suppose it can’t hurt to test the new one.
Do you know of this also triggers the fuel pump?
Thanks for your suggestion and I will also send Neil a message 👍🏻

I have a 16v 19 and I am not so familiar with the 8v variant but some suggestions:

-As Dave said above, when you put the key in the ignition, turn the ignition without starting the engine and you should hear a hum noise for 2 seconds from the back of the car. That is the fuel pump priming.

-I believe the fuse for the fuel pump is in the fuse box under the glove box.

-the fuel pump relay is in a black box on the right hand side of the engine bay next to the air filter and the coolant header tank. If the fuse is OK, you could try bridging the relay.

-some variants of the 19 have a factory immobilser that will stop the fuel pump from running. Some 19s have and extra key barrel in the glove box for disabling the fuel pump.

-the fuel pump itself sits in a cradle in the fuel tank. To access the fuel pump you need to drop the fuel tank.

-the Haynes manual has wiring diagrams and there is a Renault 19 owners Facebook group that I believe has the diagrams uploaded to the group.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Yes I believe all the dash is working but missing an engine management light if it is supposed to have one on this year.
Rear lights im not sure I will check later tonight.
I have just picked up a Haynes manual and the diagrams in it are not what is fitted to the car.
It states there should be an ignition amplifier module but all I have is a 2 wire coil with the ht lead coming of the bottom of the coil and what looks like a map sensor bolted to the top of the coil.
Both wires are white and they look to be coming straight from the ecu. They both have continuity from the ecu plug to the coil.
With ignition on both are live for 2 seconds and then again whilst cranking but I do not have an earth pulse down either of the wires during cranking.
I am presuming this is the reason why the coil is not sparking..

hi, I had a similar problem on the Renault 19 16 valve convertible.
It would turn over, but I wasn’t getting any fuel through the injectors and as previously said no sound of the fuel pump priming, I could get the car to run badly by squirting fuel in through the air intake. I then replaced the fuel pump that was corroded badly. And in their wisdom, they only put a hole in the floor to get to the sender unit, so with a compressed air nibbler wet towels and a slow running hose, cut the floor so that I didn’t have to take off the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump. Then I could get the fuel pump to make a noise when turning ignition on but car would still not run, fuel would not go through injectors ended up replacing ECU car now runs these might not be your problems but it was a case of I had two problems at the same time and I spent hours tracing wires testing relays and fuses. Good luck. Managed to get all my bits off eBay and the fuel pump for the car year and model was several hundred pound, but when I actually removed the fuel pump and got the codes I was able to find one brand-new for less than a ton good luck

Yes this may be my next hurdle.
There is very little Information out there about these old systems.
I’m old school I like to diagnose and have a definitive answer rather then shooting the parts cannon 😂😂🤦🏼
I’m sure with the help of everyone here I should be able to work this lump out 👍🏻

Hi and thanks again for all your help.
A little follow up.
I have checked and double checked all connections and ecu pins for earth power and continuity all looks fine,
The fuel pump relay is clicking in but the pump is not running so this I believe is a dodgy fuel pump itself.
However still no spark when cranking but on the odd occasion it will spark once when letting off the key.
It has new coil, new crank sensor tested and checked ok.
I believe this means the ECU is fubar…
Or have I overlooked something??
Any further help would be much appreciated guys..

I’d replace the fuel pump and see what happens. They are fairly cheap and it is a relatively straight forward job.

It could also be an immobiliser that is not leading to a spark. Do you know if the car is fitted with an immobiliser?

The immobiliser has been removed from the ecu and there is no red light flashing on the dash.
I believe that the coil is not getting an Earth signal to allow it to spark.

tested for spark on coil pack and the flywheel sensor wiring mine ended up on a pin 7 of the ECU carbon canister solenoid broken corroded wiring burning out the ECU traces only buying another ECU with thinner board copper traces that blew showed me this problem! the older analog ones don't burn, they simply don't work.
