New gearbox needed?

Ok story starts like this,

I picked the car up when i bought it and when i got home (about 250mls) I noticed some oil spotting on the rear bumper, I did not worry about it too much and it never happened again, except for a few drips under the car now and again. Then all of a sudden a whine when the clutch pedal is engaged then released and also when driving in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

I looked through the history and saw it had recently had an o/s driveshaft seal, so I mentioned this to the garage when it went in for its 72k service and cambelt.

Mechanic said the gearbox had been massively over filled and blown out the new oil seal, hence the oil spillage and the noise.

The gearbox has since been drained and refilled but the whine is still there and if not even worse :( and then this morning when I went to the warehouse where the car is parked I noticed a fairly large puddle of gearbox oil under it.

Any thoughts?

Whip it out and get someone to look at it. You may be lucky and it be something small. Overfilling is not good by any means but its far worse to under fill it so all might not be lost.

Is it a ph1 or 2?

Its a Ph.1 , I did read somewhere that the wrong oil can make it noisy, although I did check this was used with the technician, its just weird how noisy it has got so quickly

The wrong oil doesn't really make it anymore noisy. The syncro's just don't agree with it.

Shame as I just got rid of a gearbox.

I've just replaced mine for a phase 2 and have the other for sale its done about 48k with no noises it also has the mark fish short shift conversion £450.simon

Hi Simon,

Gearbox is being looked at 2moz so should know more by then, if its terminal (which I suspect) and your box is still around at
the end of the month I will take it off your hands.

I will let you know how it goes, let me know when the outer engine cover is done, fitted the inner one and it looks amazing, just a bit too noisy with the other one left off, especially with my gearbox! :)
