New Car Protection

A question for the detailing guru's. I am picking up the wifes brand new car next week, not a Renault I'm afraid. Due to the crappy weather for the next few months, at least, is there any quick protection thats worth applying to the paint and plastics so come spring I can do a proper job on it. At worst I will just give it a quick polish with some Autoglym so it at least has some protection on the paint as I doubt it has anything applied from the factory.

Anything is better than nothing :)
Your best bet is to ask that the dealership only remove the protective films to inspect for damage or defects and leave it at that.
Then once home you can give it a thorough clean and decontamination. It's likely to need some polishing - a hand polish with an all in one product like AutoGlym Super Resin Polish will be okay, then a wax, sealant, spray wax or something will give you some protection until you're ready to go the full hog with it.
In an ideal world, a ceramic coating is the best thing for a new car. Having to coated from new will get the strongest protection laid down from the get go and make maintenance and ownership easier as well as helping to hold value, in terms of appearance.

Thanks Scratcher. Is there any product you would recommend in terms of a wax, sealant ?. Would you also have any recommendations on products to protect the black plastic trim. I see there are lots of products to rejuvinate but being new I'm would assume it's more protection I need. Thanks again for your reply.

No problem :)
It's always tricky suggesting a wax or sealant as there are so many good ones out there but I can give our a few suggestions.
Collinite 476s - reasonably priced, very durable, no frills paste wax.
Collinite 845 - liquid wax, a bit more user friendly, very durable.
Auto Finesse Tough Coat - polymer sealant (with carnauba), very simple to use, great durability.
ODK Wax Concours - a bit more luxurious, increased user experience, 4/5 months durability at most. Fantastic glossy finish.
Auto Finesse Spirit - a dream to use, very strong protection, lovely warm finish.

For the plastics, Gyeon Tire is brilliant, or if you can get the car under cover for a day Car Pro Dlux is worth looking at.
