Motorbike Tyres

Chris H

master of boobies
i thought the car world was bad for rip off merchants, the biking world is even worse.

The CBX needs tyres, so been looking.

The wheel sizes are funny as everything these days in sports bikes are 17 inch rims.

The 80's sizes were up front 16 inch and the rear 18.

So i need 110/90 16 and 130/80 18

I currently have the good old Bridgestone BT45's front and rear.

So been looking at tyres, limited range due to size, I can get BT45's and Avon Roadrunner Am26's basically.

BT45's delivered £176.59

AM26 delivered £154.95

Thats online prices.

So went round to the bike tyre shop, no use could only supply for the rear BT21's at £132 and Avon Storm £110 both for the back, nothing up front.

They could supply Avon Roadrunners AM26 as a pair for £184

So thats 30 quid more just cos I used a shop.

Then fitting prices. £10 a wheel if I take the bare rims in.

£20 each if I ride the bike in!

I'll just buy em online and fit them myself.

I only used to pay 100 for a rear pireli diablo corsa 3 and 90 for a front.
This was on the zx7r though.

been thinking about it but it seems I would need to do the front forks then get something that will fit or machine the triples, then the rear will need spacers made up and then may have issues with front sprocket alignment.

Although if it all goes to plan I may need to change the wheels as the tyres will wear to quickly to keep buying old bias plies.

17 inch radials will cope better and may not last longer but will be cheaper.

130/70 18 and a 120/80 16 all incomes to £123.95

£31 cheaper if I change the profiles. I think I'll give it a bash.

finally they arrived! Only 8 days after payign for them! Ridiculous.

However it may be in my favour.

Front tyre date stamp is 1111, that means the 11th week of 2011 which is THIS week (14th - 20th March)

The rear tyre date stamp is 0811 which is 21st - 27th February

Result. Need to fit them now. Quite excited as the tyres on the CBX are dated 2001 iirc!

Fitted the rear one earlier when I had a minute, the old tyre was beyond ridiculously screwed.

New rubber

New tyre is mounted on the rim, the tyre is a good bit smaller than the old BT45, this however will help with acceleration. So theres an upside. Note how squared off the old tyre was and the general state of it.

Will do the front one tomorrow hopefully if I get a chance.

The rear tyre went on lovely, 35 PSI to seat the bead, the trick is to know where to apply lube.

it always descends into smut on here

Took it out yesterday, massive improvement, wouldn't be hard I suppose.

My sister was on her VF and holding up the show, she only goes up to 110 or so tops (erm km/h officer) whilst I usually tank up to 130 back off then mince about until she passes then fly by her again

Being out of the saddle for a few months (been out only a couple of times this year and not gone far) has left me weak to the bike.

Last night my chest was sore, today its still sore. At first I thought it was a heart attack or something. The dull ache just kept growing.

Feels like I have rowed a cruise liner across the channel. But no its just holding onto the bike with the wind trying to throw you off the back.

Need to fix the tank AGAIN. Using epoxy as nowhere will weld it as its to old or it might explode etc. idiots.
