MK1 Gearbox problem - crunch into 2nd gear

Hi,

I have just bought a clio V6 and it has developed a crunch when changing into 2nd gear. It only does it when it just been started and slightly worse when its really cold, after 5 minutes it seems to disappear. I'm hoping it's something as simple as topping the oil up and not a rebuild! If anyone has any ideas on what it might be I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave

SOUNDS LIKE IT COULD BE THE WRONG OIL IN THE BOX, USE RENAULT OIL OR SEE BELOW

The Gearbox oil must be suitable for gearboxes with bronze bulk rings as normal oil has cleaning agents added that eat into to bronze, Redline MTL is OK for these gearboxes.

Dont forget to buy the special dip stick from Renault before you drain your gearbox as you will need to dip it to check the level, DO NOT FILL IT TO THE LEVEL OF THE FILLER PLUG thats about a 1.5 litres too much. Make sure the cars jacked up level as well.

You can use normal oil and it will work but will not help the life of the gearbox.

I also used Comma Xstream G30 Antifreeze & Coolant Concentrate as a replacement for the Renault item and its approved for alloy engines

Brake fluid was DOT 5.1 Halfords.

Mine is similar when it has just been started and has always done it ever since I got it 2 years ago,I think it's a common thing on mk 1's to do with the oil being cold and thick ,it's fine as soon as it starts to warm up , Im just extra gentle on the gear changes untill it warms up a bit it normally untill I get to the end of my road , as long as is goes when it is warm I would not worry about it ,but if you have no record of any gearbox oil change have it done for peace of mind :race:

Getting the correct oil is key

The official elf stuff makes the box change better even though it smells like rotten eggs!

Think all boxes Mk 1 and 2 are sticky when cold from 1st to 2nd as I've had both on my Mk 1

Trick is be sympathetic when cold or just start off in 2nd gear as there's more than enough torque
