preRS Clio Mk1 Clio 172 wide track conversion?

Can those, if any who know whats needed to do a 172 widetrack conversion on a mk1 clio list whats needed and any issues you have come up against.

why do you need to check the subframe?

its known the wishbones bolt on just looking for info more on what you do with regards to the steering rack and anti roll bar myself. thought itd be a good info thread if a definitive answer on all the bits required was listed.

I toyed with doing this to ST-CUP when I had it.. and got myself some Hubs, Calipers, Driveshafts and wishbones. That was pretty much as far as I got..

Noticed that the wishbones pushed the wheel further forwards in the wheel arch compared to a 5gtt for more Caster (I think?)

I found the tie rods to be the same part, so as long as there is scope on the thread for adjustment then I think they would be fine for a wider track.
I am also interested in the roll bar info. I was under the impression that a mk2 clio bar wouldnt fit due to the bulge location in it.

Ah yes, that is a big point! The 172 has a big bulge for the exhaust on 1*2's. Think you have to look at 19/11/Megane ARB's? Think I also got an ARB... :ap:

did you have cup wishbones or normal 172 items? the 172 cup ones have more caster again over the normal 172 ones. from what i gather the cup items are the only ones sold new now

hmm good to know, be good if i could keep my manual rack in there rather than have to fit a 172 rack and not run fluid in it.

Adey,

I've recently done a similar conversion on my 11 turbo - here's how I went about it.

Firstly I got hold of some new 19 16v wishbones and a Polybush motorsport (black) camber adjustable inner bush kit.
The outer steel sleeve is a good press fit on the wishbones but I elected to weld mine in place for a bit of additional rigidity:-

I then added a Ruanova 'uniball' kit (ruanovaperformance.com) in place of the lower ball joint. This is a key part of the conversion as it raises the hub height, widens the track and effectively lowers the suspension without too much geometry change (Ruanova are a great company to deal with):-

However, in order to be able to deal with any bump steer issues and to ensure the steering arms had enough width - I added a Pure Motorsport bump steer adjustment kit as can be seen above. Pure Motorsport also do a kit similar to the Ruanova one and will have everything you need for the conversion - but not everything is required....
The next job for me was finding some coil-overs for the front. I bought some Group A units from Soben. These have camber adjustable lower mounts for camber, adjustable top mounts, spring platforms and bump / rebound :-

I have retained the standard 11 turbo uprights and driveshafts without too much modification - but the final piece of the jigsaw was the use of Clio Williams bearings (+2cm) in the hubs and some Pure Motorsport wheel studs:-IMG_0550.webp

As you can see from the pictures, the use of these bits and pieces has allowed me to keep the original anti roll bar using the same mountings (but with Polybush Motorsport bushings.

On the rear I've again used Soben adjustable Gp A shocks with a Ruanova Gp A stub axle kit which, while increasing the width, is also adjustable (with shims) for camber a toe:-

I'm pretty sure you'll find everything you need from these three sites, but I think I got the bearings and wishbones from Aceparts in the UK.

Hope this helps!

Wow - OK,

I hadn't really thought much about putting the car up as a 'thread'. To begin with I just wanted to get the car as I wanted and it was my intention to make any modifications easily reversible. However, when the roll cage turned up from OMP with FIA homologation (I was told it wasn't homologated), my mind was (more or less) made up - it was going Group A.
Then at the beginning of last summer I had a stroke - which came as a bit of a surprise! This made progress a little slow for a while but things are starting to take a bit more shape now. There have been some frustrating side effects though - my welding has suffered quite a bit (and it wasn't 'all that' to start with!) - MIG isn't too bad but TIG has gone right down the pan!
On top of all that I have a planning application in with the local council to build a new house and workshop - so with a little luck, and a following wind, I'll be busy with that this summer. If anyone's interested though, I'm quite happy to put up some more info on the car so far - perhaps I could add it to the oriignal post about there being "one more 11 in the UK"?

:friends.gif::ay::bi::bf::bs::bx: Yes, yes yes! Please do mate!! We all love to read about the exploits of everyone else on this club regardless of what your passion, thats the fun thing!

Sorry to hear about your stroke, but as weird as it may sound, feel free to write a few more words about that experience if you want? Sounds like you're on the mend now anyway?

So back to the 11... :df:

little thread bump here and I'm not sure if its doable so asking to see if anyone knows @Sparkysparks

I thinking of wide tracking the twingo, front suspension is basically povo spec clio 2 parts. I'd like to keep my uprights as I already have uprated the brakes and have coilovers. Id like the extra track and stronger antiroll bar. Could i get away with using the 172 arb, wishbones and driveshafts on the stock uprights?
