Mintex brake pad issue

Just a quick note to let you know I've just had an issue with some newly fitted Mintex brake pads on the rear. Basically the friction material came away from the backing plate, which meant that the backing plate managed to fall out the caliper and go round the wheel before being spat out the back of the car. This leave the car with the brake pedal hitting the floor! Luckily it was on a long straight road with very little traffic about.

Looking at the inside pad, the material on that is also starting to come away from the backing plate. I've not had a chance yet to check the other side's rear pads, or my front Mintex pads that were fitted at the same time. Both front and rear pads have been fitted less than 4 weeks.

Anyone running a recent batch of Mintex pads may want to check their pads are ok. Potentially the pad failing like mine could provide a bit of a safety risk :)

Thats very worrying Charlie... and potentially with catastrophic results!

I've just bought some of these too for the rear end. How would I check to see if they are ok..? Obviously, if they're half hanging off, or slight movement straight from the box, then they'll be fooked, but should i try parting the pad and back plate (which can only increase the risk of them falling apart... surely..??

Glad you're ok bud!!

There was no obvious problem out of the box. I think the only way you see it peeling away from the backing plate will be from running them. I think there may be a batch that have had an issue with the bond between the friction material and the backplate, the only way to find out will be for them to go through a few heat cycles and an bit of braking stress. Also, although its only 4 weeks use, that's probably the best part of 1,500 miles on them. I would imagine you'd see some form of deterioration from half of that.

I wouldn't go trying to pry them away from the backing plate to check the bond, that may disbond a perfectly suitable bond!

I'll have a look at the back of the pads in the morning an see if I can see a batch code.

Here's a picture of one of the pads:

That's just general dirt and crap, and a huge amount of brake dust as a result of trying to stop the car with only one pad.

were these genuine Renault ones? or the Citroen alternative sometimes talked about? Wondering if there is a rating issue.

Sounds like you had a binding brake, which has in turn overheated and burnt the pad off the backing. I'd certainly overhaul your calipers before just bunging some more pads in - check sliding pins and whatnot.

Not sure what mintex will have to say about it, they don't list any rear pads for the vee's but the citroen ones are close enough. That might be the reason they don't list them for the car?

If you need it I have a full rear caliper rebuild kit including a new pistion for £60
or a good secondhand caliper for £45

Cheers

Steve
