Michellin vs Toyo

I currently have Michellin PS2's and after my car control day feel they may need changing, however having had these on my Z I was wondering whether I should keep with these or whether Toyo T1R's are as good a tyre

Cheers

The PS2 are the only tyres that come in the standard size for the Vee Mk2. So if you move to the Toyo's you'll have to run with slightly different sizes.

Because of the size considerations, I'm not aware of any Mk2 owner on standard rims running anything other than the PS2s!?

Can you confirm what the standard sizes are for the standard rims on the Phase 2 - cheers. When I bought mine, it already had Toyo's fitted and will need replacing soon.

i run T1-R's on my clio v6 and T1-S'S on my exige, the T1-R@s are perfect for fast road and track

I have buyed the Kumho's KU15's a few weeks ago.

Sunday i made a test day, Zig zag lines at 170/180 km/h and pushing up & down the Hill's.

I was surprised, very good grip and stable tire walls [smilie=icon_thumright.gif]

The best price/performance rapport IMO

I run 215/40/18 tyres on the front - very little (can't remember the exact calculation) difference in circumference from the stock 205/40/18 tyre size. I run the stock 245/40/18 size tyres on the back.

The total cost of a full set of Continental Sport Contact 2 tyres was £479.60 all in ;-)

I ran the same on the front when I had 18s I used Pirellis though....not much choice in this size....
On the rear I ran 255/35/18 (Goodyear)...Mine is a Mk1 though and these were both very close to original Mk1 sizes......

Can anyone confirm that the front standard rims on the phase 2 18" alloys are only 7J and that the rears are 8.5J

By running 255/35/18's v stock 245/40/18's

The width is 10mm more
The sidewall heigth is 8.75mm less
The overall heigth is 17.5mm less
The circumference is 54.98mm less

This means that the speedo would read high by 2.75% which is more than the recommended 2.5% max.

By running 215/40/18 v stock 205/40/18

The width is 10mm more
The sidewall heigth is 4mm more
The overall heigth is 8mm more
The circumference is 25.13mm more

This means that the speedo would read low by 1.27% which is less than the recommended 2.5% max. So this size would be ok for the front. A 225/40/18 will NOT safely fit the front as the min width is 7.5J rims.

I do realise that the speedo is taken from the gearbox (unless I am mistaken), but the speedo errors above are for comparison only.

If the front is a 7J width, then the max size that will fit is 215/40/18 - but this is right on the limit - beware.

Fronts are 7 rears 8.5

225s are okay on 17 X 7 but not 18 X 7

My 18s were compomotive not standard OZs and I think they were a 7.5 front although I only ran 215. My sizing was also against standard Mk1 on 17s which has different overall diameters to standard Mk2 on 18s.

Are you sure????
Nik

Acording to this chart......

http://www.toyo.co.uk/productdetail.php ... duct_id=18

I see from the pic above that 253Horses is running Kumho KU15s on his Mk2 and they are 225/40/18..............225/35 would be closer to the original size.....

From your link your current tyre shows 205/40/17....do you not mean 205/40/18 (Mk2) or 205/50/17 )Mk1)?

I know MikeT ran 225s on his 17s for a long while before he went to 18s.

Maybe different tyres have different limits.....?

On the link I posted, you type in the values, the sizes on the site are just a default. It will show that a 7" can only take a 215 tyre and you need a 7.5" for a 225. But this is for an 18" wheel.

The toyo link you have put certainly says that a 225 is ok on a 17" - strange! But if Toyo say that and publish it on the web, it must be correct.

We'll have to wait and see if 253Horses' tyres fall off!!!!

hahahahahahaaaaa

Until now the tires on the front diden't fall off. [smilie=hide.gif]

I have pushed the Clio on mountain roads a few times really at the limit . and i am 100% confident now that i made a good choice with the Kumhos in 225/40/18 on the front.

i knew about the commandation that 225`s need a 7.5" canal, some commandations are there to avoid. [smilie=drunken_smilie1.gif]

cheers

:)

As I said, I know MikeT ran 225s on the front when on 18s also.......

Takes a brave man to push it to the limit in a V6 on mountain roads and on tyres that might fall off.......:)

unless you meant ...push it... as in broken down.
