Michelin Front Tyres

Hi all

Due to the fact that I discovered the front tyres on the vee are old... one is 2003 the other is 2004, I put a call into a tyre distributor, who in turn called Michelin directly.

There is a 10 week lead time for 205/40/18 in either ps4 or super sport. Price per tyre including fitting is £160. I'm sure that without fitting it will be somewhere between £145-148.

Is it worth putting in a bulk order from the forum?

Or should i just put ps4 or ss 215/40/18 on which can be ordered in a week?

I have not asked the distributor if there is a bulk discount, but if there are a lot of people interested I guess I can ask. I suppose the issue being that posting them to other members will incur additional cost and will maybe make them not financially viable.

Will give them a call this week and ask if there is a discount for ordering 10 or more pairs.

This might be all academic if someone knows of a supplier who can:

1) give a cheaper price and
2) has them in UK stock

Martin,

Given the age of your existing tyres, I wouldn't get your knickers-in-a-twist about cost. Think about cost/annum and they suddenly seem very reasonable. I appreciate that lead times are horrendous but there something worthwhile about waiting for the correct OEM spec performance Michelin product.

Simon Hope would remind me that the rubber is the only point of contact between the car and the road and therefore should switched routinely regardless of wear. Shame he doesn't follow this mantra about batteries! Lol!

At least I don't have to resort to setting fire to the car to warm my tyres up to get a bit of grip

I had a blowout on another car (a VW) and found the tyres were older than the car. The VW handbook said not to drive on tyres more than 6 years old !!. I changed them all.

I called the distro, he said he can do the tyres for £133.50 including VAT if we put in an order of 20. I am awaiting a call back to see if they can source them from one of their european suppliers faster than ordering direct from Michelin.

I will however ask him the year of manufacture of said tyres.

I guess it will come down to.... who needs front tyres?

How fixed are you on tyre type? I managed to find a full set of four Federal 595RSR for mine (when I eventually get it finished) in 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 (I think, they were whats on the car now anyway) for under £400 a set delivered :)

Martin, PS4's replaces PSS' in 17" & 18" sizes, with other sizes to follow in 2017.

The PS4 pretty good. What do you run on your rears?

After making my earlier comment about tyre age, I had a chance to check mine. All the tyres are older than the 2004 car, one by two years.
Someone tell me I am reading this wrong!!

Now that is interesting. Remember the time I had some 7-year old Pirelli Asymmetricos on a car which had done very little mileage in 5 years, and they felt like wood - lethal in the wet.

Hi.
I’m new to V6s so a bit slow on what the original fit tyre model was. Could I get some enlightenment on that
Also PS3 and PS4 ??. Whats that about. Not Playstations I presume !!

Help please.

I believe the Clio V6 had Michelin Pilot Sports as OEM fitment from the factory - I am not the first owner of either, but one still has its original tyres, but for the life of me I cannot remember what they are!

Until Jan 2016 the recommended replacement fitment was the Pilot Super Sport (MPSS).
In Jan 2016 the Pilot Sport 4 (MPS4 )was introduced, which has effectively replaced the MPSS in 17 and 18-inch sizes, with larger sizes to follow from 2017 onwards.

- See below for updated info

I have been running MPSS on the Vee since 2013 (OEM front size), and IMO they are an excellent summer tyre, and excels in both wet and dry - good for summer use and the occasional track day. I still run the MPSS on the V6, but have recently switched to the MPS4 on another car (front-engined, RWD, and around 200kgs lighter than the Vee) and the short experience I have had with that tyre suggests that the MPS4 is equally good in the dry. I haven't been out in the wet as yet. However, Michelin have stated (via email correspondence with the technical guy) that the MPS4 builds on technology used in the MPSS, and Michelin's involvement/experience in Formula-e. As such, I do expect the MPS4 to be equivalent to, or better, the MPSS in all areas.

As such, for now MPSS seems to be the only choice for the fronts (OEM width and profile).

Hope this helps.

Dulan

EDITED 1st May: Post updated since I had mixed up the info I had received with regards to tyres suitable for the Clio V6 255 (Phase 2):
205/40/18 Front Tyres -> Pilot Sport 4 will be launched early in 2017, Pilot Super Sport Continues until the end of 2017
245/40/18 Rear Tyres -> Pilot Sport 4 was launched early 2016, Pilot Super Sport Continues until end of 2016

Are Michelin still recommending the slightly higher profile tyre on the fronts?
Phil, answer is "yes", but see updated info above - I had made a mistake on the launch schedule for MPS4 in sizes suitable for the Clio V6 255.

Thanks Dulan. If I've read that correctly, it looks like the "correct" size will be available in 2017, whereas right now they are still the slightly higher profile?

MPS4 in front OEM spec (205/40/18) will be available "early 2017". Rears are available now - keep an eye out here: Sizes and labelling classes (Scroll down the page)

My car has wider 225/40 Pilot sport 3 fitted six years ago by Nick at EVO on Renault's recommendation when the smaller OEM size became unavailable. I find them great with loads of grip and never a hint of understeer. In an Auto express test last year they still managed to come 3rd overall out of 11 tyres only scoring badly on noise. Available for under £100.
But I assume that I will go onto the latest PSS4 215/40 ZR18 next time which seem to be £150 online

Anyone messed with tyre sizes and upset the abs system? If you mismatch profiles the abs doesn't like it and freaks out, puts all the lights on. Clever system on the clios.
