Gumtree - AGAIN, Megane Scenic T plate, taxed and MOT'd rear brakes locked on must go £400.
Basically went saw it last Thursday, laughed at the guy, admired his Mrs said let me know if it doesn't sell.
Sunday get a call guy saying what will you pay me. I say £100 he accepts.
So a Scenic taxed until the end of December and mot'd till April, brand new exhaust system (incl CAT) and a few others bits for a ton, could weigh it in for more.
What I haven't mentioned is the car was stuck at a busy junction! So I had no choice but to have it recovered, so got talking to my recovery guy and agreed a price of £40, which is steep but less than I could get elsewhere for sure.
However it was right up against the kerb so needed moved away to get it on the transporter.
So yesterday (Tuesday) I grabbed the boy I sold the coupe too (Darren) to give me a hand (my usual right hand man Kevin was at work and it was getting picked up at 5 - apparently). So got the trolley jack then headed back over, now I have wee trolleys but theres engines on every one of them, so I needed skid plates. ASDA £1 each metal cooking trays to the rescue.
Tuesday happened to be the day that the great flood was to occur but nobody let me know, so in the heaviest rain since I don't know when I had to get soaked through, clothign consisted of my boxers and my overalls, no jumper or jacket.
So jacked up the drivers side, put the tin under the wheel let it down, then from the back shoved the jack in jacked up the passenger side then shoved the car over so it was away from the kerb, then got the tin under that wheel.
Anyway I had to stay outside the car so I could hold the back end straight as it was reversed onto the bed, thing is Darren drove it and the clutch is stinking now so need to see how bad that is.
Got home after 6 and since I got soaked through at 3 pm I was freezing by 5 past then had to stay wet for another 3 hours and be outside quite a lot in the rain and wind.
No pics yet as it was way to dark.

After I got home I got to work. The priority is getting the wheels freed off.
So staring with the nearside as thats the side that was safe to work on. So jacked up wheel off.
Now the drums are separate on these so that means undoing a t 30 screw, thankfully it was only a little chewed so I hit the head with a ball peen hammer to flatten it back off then knocked in the T30 socket, perfect.
After a lot of levering and a bit of effort the drum was off.
This is the source of the problem, the pad retaining pin had pulled through the twist cap bit so the shoe was free to move about and lock up the wheel
This is the shoes off, note leaking wheel cylinder, during this I also noticed the exhaust heatshield was wet, the brake pipe that passes over the top of it is leaking so I also have to replace that
the old shoes, these were actually in good condition but i thought since I have to do the wheel cylinder I may as well make it all new
No pics of the new stuff fitted but its on the nearside, just need to do the pipe on that side still.
I bought, both wheel cylinders, shoes and a fitting kit. Might as well do it properly.

Well due to crap weather and resulting poor mood I never took any shots of the outside of the car, This is the only exterior pic i have, shot from the Laguna

The interiors pretty grubby, this is the drivers ripped seat, needs a new one
Sadly no money hidden under the seats
Anyway I then braved the torrential rain, the slight flooding only slowed me for a moment, when you sit in a puddle its really cold at first but soon you start to feel warm and the shaking stops as well.
This is the drum off, same issue as the other side with the added bonus of a shed shoe friction material, in this pic the shoe material is stuck to the drum still, shaky picture I know but lets see you have steady hands soaked right through and a billion mph wind with a wind chill factor of -700
this is said shed material
So thats the rear brakes all renewed, only have to do that leaky pipe.
Now the car moves it was taken a spin. Seems ok, although theres a broken front spring, happened moving out so thats a bit annoying.
I also hi the scrappy, got all 3 window wiper covers, much better now.
I also found an identical coloured scenic as well, so will be getting goodies off of that at the weekend most likely.

Well got up went to Renault to order a tank strap for the Safrane then headed round to the factors to get new wiper blades for the Scenic.
£12.49 for all 3 blades, not to bad. The right blades as well, proper plastic one for the rear, 24 inch drivers side and 16 inch passenger side.
These are the old ones, look at the state of them, both the fronts were 16 inch jobs, dire
Right blades fitted much better.
Got a snap of the back of the car, you can see 7 Renaults in this picture, 1 is very hidden though
I jacked up the rear, removed the exhaust hanger bracket and the heatshield etc to get access into the brake pipe, then it started pouring again so I left it for another time.

Well before the 2nd I got to the scrappy and got some bits for the beast.
Replacement slam panel, its a plain black replacement on it
Wing, front grille bits, the wing on it was missing half its paint and the front grilles were a resprayed red one and a white one with green overspray painted blue!
Misc bolts etc for the job
Strut top covers, one was missing the other damaged
New wing fitted, much better, shame its a slightly different colour and I still need to get the stripe off. But its got paint on it!
No pictures but I also got a drivers wing mirror cover, passenger interior door handle and passenger front strut.
Other jobs included replacing the nearside front to rear brake pipe.
The strut was as I suspected a collapsed strut bearing but got a full strut as knowing my luck if I just got the bearing the strut would have been terminally damaged - sods law.
I also sorted out the cause of an annoying rattle, the gearknob had separated from its white inner so it vibrated

dab of glue and back on, no rattle

Popped out and reclipped it all back together
So issues left are the slam panel, couldn't get 2 of the bolts off, some muppets used phillips coach bolts the heads rounded, so that can wait to get sorted.
Steering wheel vibration from wheels, sorted tomorrow when I stick on the alloys.
Cambelt and service needed, got the belt here, just need to fit it and do the service. Also the CTS is obviously outputting wrong as when it starts form cold its idling very low, theres no cold start enrichment occurring. Not a big issue as it doesn't stall or anything just a bit juddery at first. Also the gearbox mount as per usual on meganes is starting to break up.
Done 160 miles in it so far with no issues, £55 to fill the tank. Insurance is £75 cheaper than the 19 diesel as well! Bonus.

Well I stuck the alloys off the diesel onto this and it made it handle a bit better.
I also got a new CTS (£15 rip off but only place that had one in stock), spark plugs (£7)
The first full tank only got 350 miles to £55 of petrol! The diesel got nearly double that on £50 of diesel!
Changing the cts has made it run better hopefully the mpg will improve as well. The official mpg is only 34mpg though which is crap.
No pics but will get some with the alloys on it.

Well over the last few weeks filled up a few times now. Averaging 300 miles to £55, thats terrible coupled with the fact the car was underpowered I thought it was engine timing that was the issue.
Due to be very busy and the weather being horrendous I put this off until a clear spell yesterday, by clear spell it was not raining and the ground frozen solid so clear enough.
Anyway since I wasn't going to go down on the ground I just pulled the cover off and check it.
The first thing is the cambelt is very loose

The person who fitted the belt I'm assuming in 2006 as per the badly scrawled text on the cover put white tipex to make things, shame he never used the actual very visible timing marks, I set the bottom end to tdc and this is where the cam sat
yep 2 teeth out, since we needed to go out I re-timed it and re-tensioned it, much better, car pulls a lot better now, should also use less fuel. I need to put the new belt on but theres about 6 inches of snow outside now.

Went down to the scrappies and got another drivers seat, not impressed had to pay 20 quid for it! As they said Christmas night out etc, tossers. I did haggle them down from £30 though.
Anyway handed over the cash and took my seat away, dried it out by the radiator for most of the day then fitted it.

A vast improvement I'm sure you will all agree. this seat also had the correct fore and aft movement bar fitted, it can be loosened and swung out the way so the battery can be got at without removing the seat.
I also forgot to mention the car is Taxed until December 31st 2010, that was £190 which was not nice to spend on a bit of paper tbh.
Jobs remaining to be done to the car, fit the new cambelt, change the oil and filter, top up gearbox oil, change front gearbox mounting and source and fit correct charcoal canister.

This actually happened yesterday.
Basically car cold start, frozen screen etc wipers left on last time it was driven so the minute the car started they tried to wipe. The result was a bang and no wiping action.
So stripped the scuttle down to find the problem.
The wiper link rod from the motor to the actual wiper arms had popped off.
You may notice the rusty side the cap isn't a cap any more just a hole.
This is the motor arm
So what happened?
Well from observation water runs into the cup, this is evident by the rusty staining. This water ran in then froze expanding and cracking the plastic socket cup thing then the wipers not being able to move easily was the final straw and it burst.
I need a new arm, no way do I fancy buying a new linkage from the scrappy.
Its a priority as the car is not able to be used in this condition, the arms pops off again for those that think I should just pop it back on.

I got a new arm for the linkage yesterday, it was in as new condition, it also has rubber boots on it so the water doesn't get in. So thats working perfectly again.
Since we had the car it seemed like there's no or at least very limited load correction done by the ICV. Clod starts left the engine idling very low and lately has required throttle to actually start.
So I pulled off the throttle body. Removed the ICV and cleaned the throttle body, it was reasonably dirty, still restored to as new condition. Then I focused on the ICV. This was very gummed up, took a lot to clean it then took a fair bit of effort to move the pintle in and out, I did so a few times until it felt right. I pushed the pintle fully in and refitted it to the TB.
TB back in, cycled the ignition a few times then started the engine, it raced away, idling around 2.5 krpm. Turned it off, managed to remove the ICV in situ, leaving it plugged in, cycled the ignition a few times doing so each time the ICV moved as it should thus freeing up, refitted the ICV to the TB cycled the ignition a few more times and it started as it should, a raised idle quickly dropping to where it should be.
Switching on a heavy load (HRW, heater fan and headlights) led to a dip then swift recovery of idle speed as it should be.
i will see tomorrow morning if its sorted out the cold start issue.
it revs better as well, but not been driven yet, after a few drive cycles it should have adapted to it properly.

Well last Friday (29th Jan) all 4 of us were in the car and some woman decided to smash into the back of us. It was quite a shunt.
Anyway the cars a write off, damage is boot floor, rear chassis legs, the tailgate, bumper and so on and on.
Pics as thats what we like, boot will not open btw
Well after we got home first thing I did was take the tax out up to the dvla and cashed it in! :lol:
then the battery is in the white chamade and the alloys are also fitted to the white chamade now.
Waiting on them coming out and inspecting the thing and taking it away. Was hoping it would be gone by now.
Ahh well, anything over £270 is pure profit anyway

I got a phone call last night asking about the engine. Somehow we agreed on £150.
yes I couldn't believe it either for the engine ALONE! Result.
Anyway the guy collected it tonight.
I got 2 pics of me ripping it out though.

Stihl sawed through the front slam, crossmember and the subframe, then dragged it out ont he jack
Made nearly £1k on this car! :lol:
Got the cat etc to weigh in.

Well this morning I had it picked up. I removed the front struts complete with hubs, callipers, discs etc though.
Now sadly as I don't have a trailer or the time to chop it up I have to farm that work out. So I got 30 quid for what was left of the shell, not bad I suppose.
So the final breakdown of it is as this.
Money spent on the car, to buy it get it on the road and used daily
£286 - £15 (for the CTS thats now in the white chamade)

Overall current profit £910 - £271 = £639
This is not including the road tax I cashed back in which will give us back £174 but the DVLA are being tossers about this.
I still have the CAT to weigh in, some metal work also, still got a gearbox here to sell and so on.
So doing not bad at all with it. Scenic the gift that keeps on giving :lol:

Now sadly as I don't have a trailer or the time to chop it up I have to farm that work out. So I got 30 quid for what was left of the shell, not bad I suppose.
So the final breakdown of it is as this.
Money spent on the car, to buy it get it on the road and used daily
£286 - £15 (for the CTS thats now in the white chamade)
£271
Sold engine for £150
Insurance payout £730
Scrapped shell £30
Total £910
Overall current profit £910 - £271 = £639
This is not including the road tax I cashed back in which will give us back £174 but the DVLA are being tossers about this.
I still have the CAT to weigh in, some metal work also, still got a gearbox here to sell and so on.
So doing not bad at all with it. Scenic the gift that keeps on giving :lol:
Just glad the things gone now. Only used it for 2 months as well!
