Megane conversion

R19 16v

does the megane 16v engine drop straight into the 19 or what woulfd i need to do the conversion because ive been offerd an engine and gearbox

This is a topic thats been covered quite a lot, a good read would be in the engine build section of the forums where Neal has dropped a F7R megane engine into his ph1, mickpm dropped a megane F7R into his ph2 and I'm currently rebuilding a Megane F7R which is going into my Ph2.

Simple answer is YES, the megane 2.0 16v F7R engine will drop straight into the 19s engine bay and will use the same engine mounts as the 19's 1.8 16V F7P, it will also mate up to the JB3 gearbox thats in there but it would be better to get the JC5 from the megane as its geared up to suit the megane engine.

Sadly its not just a case of dropping it in and plugging in all the wires, the megane engine uses a coil pack system to fire the spark plugs where as the 19s engine uses a distributor.
You can get the meganes head machined to take the distributor though which is the route neal and myself have took, Mick kept the coil pack system and rewired his 19 to take the whole of the meganes wiring loom and also changed his 19s dash to the dash from the megane.
Then there is the setting up of the Megane TPS, blocking off the EGR holes in the inlet manifold, all this info is pretty much covered in Neal's report.

There are other options, use the meganes 2.0 bottom end and retain the 19's head and use that on the meg bottom end (no faffing about with getting the inlet manifold, throttle body, TPS, dizzy setup) or use the 2.0 16V F7R from a Williams Clio which still uses the same dizzy, inlet manifold, tps etc as the 19

If you use a megane engine, put a 1.8 head on it, dont waste your time fucking about with the megane head to get it going, nothing but hassle.

He's right mainly due to the head work required to fit a distributor but i'm still gonna use one on a 710 powered Clio i'm building for someone at the minute. I've nearly finished the TB conversion plate Neal ;)

The F5R is a pretty good engine... but not for what you want to do. It has a fair bit more torque than the F7R but on the flip side to that coin it's troublesome as hell and parts aren't cheap either.

Saying that I slung an F5R powered Megane Cabby around Donnington and was impressed at how well it went.

F5R???!! What's that come out of then prey tell?!:?:p

just drop the megane dash and wiring in the 19 too and it'll go in without any engine modification. Mick did that to a 19 a while ago.

there are mixed feelings to the look of the megane dash but tbh I think it's just as nice and much easier to get to the clocks when the bulbs and wires go wrong. (and it's posible to do it on a £150 budget if you find a cheap megane for spares.)

LoL BE WARNED though when attempting the dash conversion as it's not as simple as I liked to tell other people wanting to do it ;) You have to do a fair bit of modifying to the physical dash itself to get it in as the 19/Megane bulkheads are different and so are the heater blowers, Looms etc and there's a lot re-wiring that needs to occur to make the Megane electrics interface with the 19 hardware. It all works when done but its by no means "plug and play"

I to liked the Megane dash in the 19 but it was subjective especially around here with the purists but each to their own! The only really gay bit about the Megane dash is the location of the hazzard light switch cos you can't see it on RHD models.

On an electrics front be sure to get the fuse box, ECU and plip keys from the same megane 16v as the lot are coded. Mix and match them and you'll get no sparky spark spark ;)

Engine install looks fecking smart in that. Were you using the top cambelt cover mount or was the bracket thing left there to look right?

God, that dash mings though, especially in the 19! :p

It was there purely to hold the ECU but it did look smart. The coilpack only just cleared the strut brace to 8) TBH I kind of wish we'd kept the car and started totally from scratch with the Tourer cos seeing pictures of it again upsets me.

Can you believe the car was filthy in that picture to
