Machine Polishing and Compounding

I bought a Sealey MS900PS / 170mm (variable speed) a couple of years ago to do a spot of polishing, but never got around to using it due to lack of polishing mops, compound and polish!

I need to know what mops to buy, what compounding stuff to buy and what polish to buy.....and where from! Mainly, I just want to use it to buff up the cars once a year (polish only) but I also have a couple of cars that need a light compounding, then polishing.

A couple of additional questions. One of the cars that needs compounding is a Jag with a clear coat....will compounding then polishing the clear coat work?

Also, when compounding or polishing, the mop will get full of old paint and clear coat. Can they be cleaned, or are a few mops required if doing a couple of cars a few times?

I want to practice on the Jag with dull paint before I let rip on the Vees!

Thanks...Mark

I can answer a wee bit.

3m polishing pads go in the washing machine.
Mine are what Dawn advised me to get:

Green = medium cutting
Blue = fine finishing

I have Meguiar's Ultra Cut Compound (#105) and Meguiar's Ultra Finishing Polish (#205)

I haven't actually used any of it on my own car, the daughters wee Clio looks a lot better. ;)

When Dawn (MagpieV6) visits me, she has dozens of each type with her, and a bag full of dirty washing to do when she gets home.

Thanks guys. The Meguiars is ordered up and I'm checking out the compatibility of pads for my polisher.

I've been watching Junkman2000 on Youtube on polishing for novices. He does take 90 minutes explaining things that could be described in 20, but I've learnt heaps! I now need to find some waffle weave towel, some Zaino Borderless Blond towels and some Gary Dean Detail Juice, whatever the hell that is!

I will be checking out Dawn's posts. The ones I looked at previously assumed the basic knowledge that I didn't have then, but think I have now....a dangerous assumption!

Thanks...Mark

I'm not sure that my Mars machine needs too much more polishing, after the 2nd owner polished it every weekend for 10 years. The cat can't get on the roof to sit in the sun as the bonnet is so slippery.

This is what it looks like after being hosed down and a quick dry. It may be just too reflective to show up on a photo with any more shine!!
