Learner Driver Insurance

Hard to believe but my daughter is 17 the end of June. So I've been thinking, what is the most insurance friendly 2nd hand car? I know she loves the new shape mini and could pick up a 2001 for a decent price but know the 1.6 litre engine will crucify the insurance premium. I was thinking maybe a 1.2 Mk2 Clio and someone mentioned an early Smart car.
So what half decent first car would people recommend?

Engine size isnt so much of an issue, not is tpft/fully comp.

Alot of the 17 year olds at work have the minis, decent enough first car....

However I will be selling a dirt cheap KA, 06 reg... Decent enough to rock about in for a year lol.

Clios are cheap and cheerful to.. plus u know how to work on them...

Cheers Shoppers, I know she'd be made up if she had a mini on the drive. Will enquiring about insurance for cars before buying go against me?
As you say I know my way around Clios and the parts are relatively as well as enough of them in the breakers for parts.

Ford KA isn't a bad shout either

Tbh mate the minis are great, but need maintaining... As does any car.

Searching lots if options on search engines won't make ant difference (just time for you), adding a parent as a name driver often helps (but don't put the insurance in your name - just as a named driver).

Yeah I've heard that, I want her to get her own no claims. I obviously will speak to SKY as I have 2 policies with them.
