Laguna II Mega Question Thread, Help Me!

Howdy,
So I have finally got a Lag II, all in all I'm delighted, beautiful looking, beautiful to drive etc, but there are some minor issued and here they are, if anoyone can help me on anything you will rock forever...

The car: 2001 Laguna II Dynamique 'Super sport' 1.8 16v

1: Yesterday when the rear passenger door was slammed the courtesy lights in the front foot wells came on and refused to turn of, even with car out and all doors closed and car locked the lights remained on, had to remove the bulbs for now anyway, but id prefer to fix this, anyone got any ideas?

2: I found a small switch beaneath the passenger seat, its still wired into something, it looks like a pressure switch of some kind however the belt up light etc in that seat all works as should, whats all this about?

3: The display on the AC unit does not light up, I'm guessing its bulbs, are these the tiny capless ones? Or could this be a fuse of some description?

4: The outside temp reads 45 degrees at normal temp then climbs and drops in accordance with outside temps. (seemingly just as an example, if our average temp here is 10 degrees then 10 is 45 on the interior display), will this effect the A/C as the A/C doesnt seem to get cold or hot to any degree worth talking about. Can the thermometer on the mirror be repaired if this is the problem?

5: The A/C (see above). The A/C aint working too well, when switchd as low as 16 degrees it definitely doesnt go that cold and max heat aint majorly warm either however it is quite warm, also the air flow out the vents is pretty weak too.

6: Next is a silly and quite odd one, front windscreen washers work as they should however when you try and give the rear sprayers a shot that switch also activates the front sprayers?

7: Suspected window regulator failure. The front pass side window is pretty much closed, maybe a half centimetre off flly closed so no water is coming through, however when you press the button to lower it it only moves about 1cm, the button will also raise it to where it started. This is the regulator aint it?

8: What is a spleen and what does it do?

9: Hazard switch... at the moment this has a coin stuffed in it to hold it up, when the coin is removed the switch drops down (as if being pressed by the invisible man) and the hazards go on, this im guessing requires a new switch yes? Also could this be the cause of the auto cancel on the indicators not working?

10: Window up/down switch for the drivers side always works when winding down but sometimes needs a little wangling to make it work to raise the window again, can this be repaired or shall I just try find a new set of switches?

11: Can 'fake' keycard shells be bought as my keycard is actually in bits.

12: The final one for now: This is a 01 1.8 16V wit 62K miles, what kind of mileage should I be expecting as no matter how I alter my driving style I cant get better than 34.2 MPG, doesnt sound too great to me.

So thats my lot, for now anyway, anyone who can help answer any of these questions will have a special place in my heart forever...

Many many thanks

Have you got the the Repair manual's PDF. ???

MR339LAGUNA0.pdf - MR339LAGUNA8.pdf

I like em and tbh i hear that kind of thing about every renault i have ever owned but its usually courtesy of some twat who's owned a dozen civics, a pulsar and a deli boy, im quite happy with it and its still going without many problems after 11 years so that says something about it

nah not got a decent manual in pdf mate, got one but its unclear as its all in photograph form

I can send the PDF, i've got, what engine is it, I might have that also.

might help fix,/ show a breakdown of any prob, if not, it still handy. Be tomorrow, now tho chap, as I'm running out of time, let me know where to send.

its the 1.8 16V engine pete, not sure of the code though, all this generation of renault are completely new to me

ill pm you my mail addy there in a sec pete, just going to try find out the engine code now, much appreciated mate

the switch for these is not in the door pillar like the older things but on the actual latch, The wire is probably shorting out or something now.

2: I found a small switch beaneath the passenger seat, its still wired into something, it looks like a pressure switch of some kind however the belt up light etc in that seat all works as should, whats all this about?

no idea get a picture

3: The display on the AC unit does not light up, I'm guessing its bulbs, are these the tiny capless ones? Or could this be a fuse of some description?

its bulbs, why they didn't use smd's I don't know. Its silly bulbs I think which is why I still haven't done ours. I imagine your start button doesn't light up either.

4: The outside temp reads 45 degrees at normal temp then climbs and drops in accordance with outside temps. (seemingly just as an example, if our average temp here is 10 degrees then 10 is 45 on the interior display), will this effect the A/C as the A/C doesnt seem to get cold or hot to any degree worth talking about. it is the mirror sensor that controls that. However the fact it works ok but at the wrong reading tells me you may have a high resistance joint somewhere. I have replaced ours twice, they work for a short while then they die. No idea why ours goes through them at such a rate.

5: The A/C (see above). The A/C aint working too well, when switchd as low as 16 degrees it definitely doesnt go that cold and max heat aint majorly warm either however it is quite warm, also the air flow out the vents is pretty weak too.

Airflow first, the pollen filter will be blocked. Either get a new one or just pull it out and leave it out. To get to it open the glovebox and unscrew the torx screws and yank it out. This is covered in my report. I imagine the AC doesn't work. When you hit the button do you hear the compressor engage? Do the radiator fans come on? Now professionals like me with their f gas certs etc cannot advise non trained personnel on these things but in the old days a cheeky way to see if a system had any charge was to pop off the cap and press the schraeder valve with a screwdriver. A charged system will hiss a lot and visibly vent even a milli second push. An empty system will hiss a wee bit and thats it if at all.

6: Next is a silly and quite odd one, front windscreen washers work as they should however when you try and give the rear sprayers a shot that switch also activates the front sprayers?

the same pump is used, terrible set up. Ours won't even work on the back, that facts yours does is actually a rarity

7: Suspected window regulator failure. The front pass side window is pretty much closed, maybe a half centimetre off flly closed so no water is coming through, however when you press the button to lower it it only moves about 1cm, the button will also raise it to where it started. This is the regulator aint it?

what happens if you press the button again and again? does it inch down?

8: What is a spleen and what does it do?

primary blood filter, superflous really with modern healthcare etc

9: Hazard switch... at the moment this has a coin stuffed in it to hold it up, when the coin is removed the switch drops down (as if being pressed by the invisible man) and the hazards go on, this im guessing requires a new switch yes? Also could this be the cause of the auto cancel on the indicators not working?

another very common failure, most at the scrappies will be the same. Ours has the habit of sometimes popping up and the hazards could be on all night etc. This means the car will often require a jump as when the hazards are on the car doesn't enter sleep. Shouldn't affect the indicators thats the stalk and the steering wheel that controls that, most likely the wheel needs knocked down a bit.

10: Window up/down switch for the drivers side always works when winding down but sometimes needs a little wangling to make it work to raise the window again, can this be repaired or shall I just try find a new set of switches?

new switch, common issue a lot in scrappies may be the same or worse though and theres 3 that I know of connector styles

11: Can 'fake' keycard shells be bought as my keycard is actually in bits.

get one off ebay or even better get another key, theres a guy here that does em for about 100 quid coded to the car. nThe actual key is a 30 quid laser cut from renault only job though.

12: The final one for now: This is a 01 1.8 16V wit 62K miles, what kind of mileage should I be expecting as no matter how I alter my driving style I cant get better than 34.2 MPG, doesnt sound too great to me.

Thats piss poor, ours gets that sitting at 90. Normally with her driving its around 44 mpg, if I drive it and on the motorway it can creep up to 50 mpg as long as I don't go over 70.

So thats my lot, for now anyway, anyone who can help answer any of these questions will have a special place in my heart forever...

the kit is expensive and you only get the disc and cover as the bearing is part of the concentric slave assembly. I couldn't get a bearing without the assembly and wasn't willing to pay the ransom for it so I took the bearing apart and lubed it. Again this is covered in my report.

An update on this one, not got around to much cos ive been up to my eyeballs of late.

The rear/front sprayer problems i thought could be sorted out by a new washer stalk so i got one, this has not worked sadly, the problem remains, front sprayers work fine but then you try and activate the rear sprayer the same happens (it sprays the front)

The window regulator problem, not been able to afford a replacement at the minute but nah chris it doesnt inch up or down or anything it just goes up and down the 1cm or so, no budging it from that

Have removed the pollen filter and the ac works much better, so will prob invest in a new one, what is tis high resistance joint you speak of chris? i got a new temp sensor earlier today (thermometer from the mirror itself) not got to fitting it just yet although during the week the temp has read anything from -2 to +45 or so

Got a hazard switch in the breakers (for free) and as you said chris this one had more issues, didnt work at all actually so ill just get another one

Got the drivers side window controls today also, put the new ones in and they had the same problem so just used the 2 rear window switches in place of my 2 front ones, so now i have rear window switches but theyre identical anyway apart from the fact that you have to do a little wangling as the guide thingies on the block are in slightly different places

Not had a chance to get to the courtesy light switch on the rear door however i discovered that if i get in, the courtesy lights will come on then once fired up they turn off as normal however if the car is already running and the rear door gets opened and closed the courtesy light stays on, bizarre

thats the wee update for now anyway, as you can see i got pretty much nothing done so far

thanks for the help so far though

because its the motor like I already told you

The window regulator problem, not been able to afford a replacement at the minute but nah chris it doesnt inch up or down or anything it just goes up and down the 1cm or so, no budging it from that

take the door card off, some has probably wedged somehtign inside to hold it up

at the mirror plug or the door plug generally

Got a hazard switch in the breakers (for free) and as you said chris this one had more issues, didnt work at all actually so ill just get another one

the indicators still work if you leave it unplugged

Got the drivers side window controls today also, put the new ones in and they had the same problem so just used the 2 rear window switches in place of my 2 front ones, so now i have rear window switches but theyre identical anyway apart from the fact that you have to do a little wangling as the guide thingies on the block are in slightly different places

rear switches are different, they don't have one touch close

Not had a chance to get to the courtesy light switch on the rear door however i discovered that if i get in, the courtesy lights will come on then once fired up they turn off as normal however if the car is already running and the rear door gets opened and closed the courtesy light stays on, bizarre

either the card reader is missing the accesory switch lever or more likely the door switch is the issue

thats the wee update for now anyway, as you can see i got pretty much nothing done so far

Initially I cleaned out the rear sprayer and it worked in a very feeble manner but then the problem returned, i really dont want to have to take the bumper off but it looks like i'll have to at this stage.

Got a new regulator, window sorted, the old one had become freyed and made a right mess in there.

Got another mirror temp sensor, problem solved, easily fixed

Yep unplugged now hazards dont work indicators do, thats good enough for me for now

Yeah i do miss the one touch close alright but for now again this will do as both sets of fronts that i have are both reluctant to work

Have gone through all the door light switches, they seem to function as they should so i guess this is the card reader, I have seen a few guides on repairing the card reader accessory switch, there seems to be a method where you can glue a small arm that is common to break using glue, is this the repair that would effect this problem?

As ever Chris thanks very much for your help

it did that because it wasn't working right. Ours is the same as is 99% of them. i tried to get to the washer bottle after the 2nd bolt snapped I left it

the usual

card reader repair is covered in my project report near the start

As ever Chris thanks very much for your help

awesome, ill get on that repair, after that it needs the rear bushes replaced and a clutch, thats pretty much all then, ive got off fairly lightly so far
