phil are you the guy that bought jainys old one?

think i'll take it out tonight for a wee blast into carlisle

I am indeed.

There seems to be quite a few owners in Cumbria. I saw another Iliad in workington last saturday.

Colin,

We should get something set up for a mini meet. What about a run up Hartside maybe? A few of the other guys did one back around the royal wedding but I couldn't make it. Only thing is im going to be busy most weekends in June and then its the big lakes meet at the start of August.

Will have to get mine looking a bit more spick and span also! Your fantastic paintwork will put mine to shame!

Out of interest does the AG SRP do the same job as a good claying? Or would it be better to clay first then polish? Also with the EGP stuff, do you apply this instead of a wax or before? Please forgive my complete lack of detailing knowledge!

Phil

AG SRP actually is a great all rounder product, simple, it tends to fill in swirls and mask them rather than actually removing them with a proper cutting polish and machine,

Ive never clayed a car in my life so unfortunately cant comment on this lol its just a step i dont deem necessary...

EGP is best applied over SRP and it gets better the more coats you put on, adding depth and the wet look, make sure you give it 24 hours between coats though so it bonds to the paint properly..

Wax can be applied over EGP but most dont bother, i do occasionally but EGP is a such a good barrier a wax isnt essential :)

I love AG SRP, best polish

I think claying is worth while if its never been done. I recently done a white EK9 we washed, dried then clayed. The amount of crap and tar you get from using clay is amazing. Its prettly long winded and takes a while but is worth it in prep of everything else, polish, wax etc

Lookforward to more pictures Colin!

Thanks for the advice chaps [smilie=thanks.gif]

Never really got into the whole detailing thing with my previous motor but I think the vee warrants extra attention

Surface preparation is the key, the flatter and cleaner the surface the glosser and deeper the paint will look. Claying removes fall out, paint is not flat and as so air born particles sit in these groves in the paint and are not removed by washing. Something like AG SRP is mildly abrasive so will remove some but not all impurities, although having said this claying will not affect the gloss level that much. Claying will also removes old wax polishes etc to give you a fresh base to work from. If you really want to go to town I would use something like iron x first to remove metal contaminates, clay will remove some but you are asking it to do a lot.

Lime prime is also a good filler, but remember you are filling scratches so they will return over time. And don’t get hung up on expensive waxes they do nothing for paint apart from help to protect they will not add to its appearance. It’s the steps before that do.

chris, what clay would you reccomend mate? and which lubricant?

never having used the stuff before i wouldnt want to damage anything?!

Biggest thing when claying Colin is to keep the area well lubricated and you can't go wrong.

Years ago we got a Meguiars starter kit - clay, quick detailer and a cloth, to this day we still use the Meguiars clay and buy quick detailer as we need it.

I'm sure others can also comment and what they find good, cleanyourcar.co.uk is a good site for buying all your cleaning bits as is i4detailing.co.uk

i used the meguires clay kit,you get a couple blocks of clay, lubricant and a microfibre cloth, think
i payed about £20 for it but worth every penny.amazing the amount of sh1t that comes of the paint
when claying even after a good wash, paintwork feels like glass afterwards esp after a polish and wax.

Ok I'm sold on the megs kit then! How far does one piece of clay go? An do you have to keep changing the clay so you don't drag grit etc all over the car?

Have to admit, have really started to enjoy cleaning the vee. I'm not brilliant at it but I'm getting better I think. I tend to leave the interior for Shaun to do when he comes by I might add. lol

Ive used the Miguires clay bar along with the speed detailor and the results are excellent.

I think you get two bits of clay in the megs kit and a wee plastic tub to keep it in. I would say 1/2 a bar of clay would do. Warm it up in your hands and use plenty 'lube' .... imo

Have I joined the wrong forum. LOL

I am in the middle of detailing my Audi over the next 2 days and about to use clay, egp and srp. Not 100% about it but if you want I'll keep you posted.

Alex

The megs clay kit is not a bad one at all, the clay is quite mild so wont mar the paint plus you get all the bits with it.

As for lube like they say when claying keep the surface well lubricated. and clay in straight lines, to help avoid swirls. Clay will go along way, mold it flat in into a peace about 5 or 6cm round then when you see a reasonable amount of contaminates turn it over and go again, (otherwise you will just be dragging crap over your paint) the clay does not need to be thick. You can also make your own lube with lightly diluted car shampoo. When you have washed the car don’t dry it as the water will help with the lube as you clay. Wash again after claying though.

If you just want Meguiars basic polishes, clay and wash products, don't forget that Halfords larger stores have had 3 for the price of 2 offers on for the last couple of months, so you'll get the cheapest of the 3 products free.
Or other suppliers polishes, waxes, etc for that matter. A good time to stock up or re-stock.
