Car won't start.

Battery ok at 12.5 V.

All electrics work fine. Lights wipers stereo etc.

When I turn the key I just hear a relay in the back clicking, or nothing at all. No movement from starter etc.

Now waiting for the RAC. :(

Ideas? :?

Sticky solenoid on the starter motor, battery should be more 13.5v than 12.5v tho mate i think, might be why.
Takes a shitload of power to turn it over so a slight drop in battery power can have dramatic affect.

RAC should sort it tho good luck tho.

Had another bloody coil go on me yesterday, luckily I had a spare (thanks again TRW1)

Changed it myself in a couple of mins, light on the dash turned off on its own.
 
Well even with a jump it didn't start. Had to bump start the fecker.

Drove to hill and turned off again.

Still no joy. Just clicking from relay.

Bumped it again and drove to stealers.

Left it there in the dark all alone. :shock: :cry:

Well at least no-one can nick it without a lorry. Its fecked even with the key! :wink:

Important question! Is a new starter an engine out job? Ahem... Alex? Scott?

I don't want to get mis-lead by the stealers telling me the engines needs to come out when it doesn't. :roll:

Sticking starter solenoids can often be freed by tapping them - though on the Vee I am not sure how easy this is.

Heat in the engine bay can be a contributor to this problem.

Cheers for the info everybody! :D She is at the stealers at the moment. There is hope if I need a new starter then Renault will pay for some of the cost.

IMO it could be connection to the starter / the solenoid, but its not the battery as the jump start did not help.

Fingers crossed they can have a look today and just a dodgy connection.

It was tested by the RAC guy under load so hopefully its the engine side of the electrics at fault.

Bear in mind it has been left with the stealers since Sunday night. Come thursday they tell me it starts fine! Its cured itself. Yes they admit every other feckin day it wouldn't start. But today to drive it into the garage to actually check it, its fine. AAAAAAAAAAAArgh. :evil:

Useless sh1ts! I bet they never find out whats wrong and I get to worry about it forever more. :( I'd rather it cost £££ than sit in the back of my mind worrying me. :(

Ever since the NYE w/e it has been turning over painfully slowly as if its about to die and not start. It does infact fire every time but it sounds as tho the battery has only enough power left to turn it once. VERY worrying.

So I thought i'd throw a new battery at it anyway as its certainly still on its first battery and its now over 3 years old. Of course it made feck all difference. :evil:

So I book it into the stealers to be looked at on Thursday. Every time I start it its the same. It barely turns over (very slowy) but it does start. This is from cold and when hot. Its even the same when I start to drive there on wednesday night. Can you guess whats coming? When I drop it there on the way it cures itself AGAIN.

TBH after they couldn't find a problem on thursday I drove down to test myself and yes there is no longer an issue. It rurns over perfectly.

Totally at a loss. Sounds like a random bad connection. Its not heat related and can sometimes be changed by driving the car a long distance, and sometimes by just pushing it a few yards (as it did last time it was at the stealers). BUT sometimes neither help!

I don't want to go down the route of swapping random bits as that will quickly get expensive. Starter (and solenoid) is £270+2.5hrs = nearly £600!

Well it was still in the garage this morning when I went into the garage.

Bad earth springs to mind (dry joint), loose connection or one of the crimps joints is bad.

Another thought fuse holders can give problems,
