Help! Rear handbrake adjuster stuck

Peter255

Active Member
I'm chaning the rear discs and pads.

Working on the nearside at the moment.

We have wound the handbrake adjuster the wrong way (apparently). And now its stuck! Bugger.

Anyone know for sure which way to wind the thing back in to fit the new pads?

We tried clockwise (the obvious choice) but that would appear to be wrong.

Anyone changed the pads recently and remember which way for certain?

Even with the bleed nipple slackened off we can't seem to get the piston back to fit the brakes!

Cheers

Cheers James. :approve:

Got it sorted in the end. [smilie=icon_cheers.gif]

Had to get the calipers off completely to wind them back on the bench.

Now just got to bleed the feckers. [smilie=icon_aaargh.gif]

oh yes! my least favorite part of the car (and I got 4 more the same on the SPider!) glad you got it sorted, I have resorted to carfully applying the break pedal to push the piston out a bit further and then start re-winding it back (clockwise). Check your handbrake after doing it though peter as mine only worked on one side for a while, took the pads out and repeated the process and it then worked. I have still yet to have an explanaition how these callipers work in relation to the handbrake releasing the pressure on the piston once it is released.??????
Potential group buy? some decent rear callipers up to the the standard of the fronts.

New rear brakes sound good Mark, but would IMO have little effect on the car, except maybe saving a lot of swearing and grazed knuckles. ;)

From my experience you need to completely remove any restriction from the fluid escaping the piston to easily wind back the adjuster. The bleed nipple was insufficient. With just the bleed nipple open it was almost impossible to turn. However with the brake pipe removed it was only just over finger tight. The thread on the adjuster is quite coarse and a 1/4 turn on the adjuster squirted quite a bit of fuild out of the brake pipe. I think its trying to move the fluid that makes it so hard.

Tested and the handbrake works both wheels and the brakes are now good (after a good bleed). Phew.

Had to work the handbrake many times to re-adjust it tho.

Not a nice job. Oh and FYI anyone attempting this you do NOT need to disconnect ANY of the ABS sensors to change both the disc and pads. Driver side (IIRC) looks dodgy but you can remove the disc with the caliper in place (with pads removed).

Cheers
Peter :)
