5 GT Turbo heLP! R5 GTT does not start after engine rebuild

Hi All,

I have fully rebuild the 5 engine, looking great ! but it does not start! Here is the things I have checked:
- New battery, starter cranks fine.
- Timing: when the marks on the flywheel are at 0°, then piston N°1( near flywheel) is a TDC to start combustion stroke (valves do not open just before or after TDC) and distributor aligned north to south, with the rotor end to the front of the car.
- Spark: it has spark, I have changed the distributor cap and rotor after I check. I will re-check but I'm confident it has spark.
- Fuel / Carb: it has fuel in the fuel line before the carb. Question: I can hear the fuel pump when I return the key to lock position, but before that I cannot hear the pump- is this normal? I also tried adding fuel directly into the manifold and nothing, not even coughing. When I move the throttle i can see fuel going down the carb.
- Crank position sensor; connected, not reversed cables (standard).
- I left out all air connections to the turbo and plastic lobster, but this should not prevent engine from starting.

Any ideas ? same experiences ?

Thanks.

HI Brigsy,

Yes and Yes. Firing order 1-3-4-2; the leads can be seen (ish) in the picture...
I wonder if it is some electrical trouble; tomorrow I will check all connections to the AEI unit - voltages etc and I will check spark again.

What lights should turn on in the dashboard when key is at ignition on ?

Dont worry about lights yet.

Check for spark
Take a HT lead off. Use some insulated plyers and ask someone to crank the engine over. Check for spark by holding next to block. Repeat for the other 3

Check for fuel
Take the carb fuel feed pipe off.
Put the end in a glass / plastic container
Ask someone to crank the car.
See if you get any fuel.

If you get both of the above them we are really reducing what could be left.

Its probably the TDC then , or the AEI.

Good HT system, spark is absolutely fine. That is the good news, the bad news is that the engine has zero compression, nothing in all cylinders. Adjusting valves next as I suspect they are staying open / forgot to adjust them after the rebuild and head has been skimmed. If it is not that - I will check cyl head bolts and re-tighten them.
Fuels is also flowing. Getting there- at least with the diagnostics.
Keep you guys posted.

Done! Engine started after valves adjustment. Cold compression test was 120-119 in all cylinders. A bit low for the references I found but I measured cold because it did not start before today. Has anybody measures cyl pressure cold before ?
