How can you put the head gasket on the wrong way around i don't know! Replace the pulley on the bottom end will be fiddly as the plastic surround needs to come off to get to it and these sometimes can be hard to get off with such little space.

Ive seen some Crazy things happen when you give college level one boys a few spanners! seen someone unbolt an ax gt cylinder head, lifted it up and slid new head gasket in on top of the old one... it ran for a few minutes...

Also a level2 lad beating a piston back in a bore with a hammer as he didnt know what a ring compressor was!

You gotta be shitting me!!! I never knew what a ring compressor was, but I know what the rings are ... And some of the people will become the mechanics we know to screw up out cars and cost us money and time

A friend of mine an nvq level 3 and skoda trained technichian, managed to put a clutch plate in a saxo the wrong way around, he only realised his mistake when he went to test drive it....
Just because they work at a reputable Dealers doesnt mean there much cop, What makes me laugh are the level one trainee students who think they are the worlds best mechanics

Ok, back on topic :P

Can anyone let me know what 'special' tools i'm likely to need in order to get the head off?

What do i need to 'torque' the head bolts up? Or can i get away with just doing them clockwise until they're tight (similar to how you'd do a clutch?)

Thanks!

head bolts need to be torqued up in five stages..

i,ll check in a minute as i can't remember of the top of my head..

you need tiny hands and stretchy arms...

when i took the head off i took the two little dowels off then head and put them onto the block so you can put the gasket onto the block so when offering the head back on it is much easier!! as its quite heavy with the mani on and being on your own

you will need a torque wrench. at least one T55 bit. on a 3/8ths drive. you can fit a 1/2 inch drive in the outer 4 headbolt holes but not the inner 6. if you have a haynes manual that gives you the plan for tightening them up. if not let me know and i can post up a pic.

Did fine all here with 1/2 inch drive! Havent had any T55 bits snap on me

^^lol! maybe we have diferant heads! :S or did you use a t55 with a long shank?? i snapped 2 undoing mine. pretty much broke my finger when one of them went! :( my finger went through the loop on the right hand side of the head as you look at it! :(

Well i've used like 3 cylinder heads now and both the short and long torx bits fit :D

Right, need to think about ordering a new headgasket now.

I've seen this kit on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RENAULT-CLIO-WILL ... 240%3A1318

i think asfb2005 has used the same kit and he says the quality is OK.

Has anyone ever used this kit? Is it any good? or should i stick to genuine Renault stuff?

I want to replace all gaskets/seals, including cam/dizzy seals etc.

It also mentions they can supply headbolts. Again, should i be using Genuine?

Cheers.

Pattern stuff is fine, im using an "FAI" patten headgasket and "BGA" headbolts, as supplied by craig in my ITB build.

think they were glacier sets which are fine..

i usually use payen gasket...

never used renault except for core plugs and oilway plugs

What did you get with it? Everything you see in the pic?

The pic seems shared between many different ebay sellers so i'm not going to assume that's what you get lol

Does it come with all the seals shown? Inlet, exhaust, cam cover, cam seals, dizzy seal, stem seals? any others?

I've sent them a question just to confirm, looks like i'll be ordering the gasket set and headbolts from there then.

Cheers.

I ordered this exact set mate, looks pretty good, you get all the seals and usual HG stuff, really quick delivery too.
