Gear Linkage

Hi people,

As some of you are aware i have just got duncans v6 off him today.
Well just went to my cousins and took him for a quick blast down the a69 and when going from 3rd-4th the gearstick just became loose moving loosely back and forth. Immediately worrying but then coasted down to about 50 i let the clutch out and realised gearbox is all ok and it is stuck in 3rd.
Managed to get back to my cousins. But as i am a virgin v owner and relatively poor with mechanics.... i am assuming its a linkage somewhere.

Where am i likely to find the weak link that has broke/come off??? do i have to get it to a garage or can i simply check by other means such as remove gearstick casing?

thanks
j

Thats not good mate.

I dont know the answer to your question unfortunately.

Can somebody else please help?

I can only help by showing you the diagram.

thanks...

this could be an expensive introduction to ownership.. id imagine it could be quite labour intensive?? specially to someone not in the know...
doubt my local renault stealer would have seen many vees.

where would i find a list of specialists??

thanks
j

That's not good :( I hope it's just a minor issue

Hopefully Oldskoolbaby will see this and can advise.

I remember Brett having an issue with his one night and had to use cable ties to get it home

Yes so do i mate, hopefully he will be along soon.

I will drop him a PM

First off fella, relax!! Its nothing expensive to sort. This happened to me after my cambelt change and was caused just through a little bit of wear and tear on the ball socket. Unfortunatly I ouldn't manage to push it all the way home on the side of the A2 so had to resolve to tying it in place with a phone charger lol  As for your car it certainly isnt any ill doing on Duncans part, just a little bit of bad luck for you.

Take the engine cover off and you will see its a very quick and easy fix. :approve:

Thanks guys, this is the best forum ever by the way.

I know its nothing to do with duncan, just one of those things aftwerall its a 9 yr old reno! its gonna take alot more than that for me to be remotely put off.

So Brett the linkage problem is likely to be behind engine somwhere....?

thanks for all your help - now i have to get ready for a christening  , so do i be antisocial and not drink go look at vee this afternoon or do i drown my sorrows......

im so gutted for you to read this, so unfortunate on the first day!

from what brett says hopefully its something you can fix without any hassle.

if i can be of any help, just shout!

Thanks Brett for the return PM and your reply on here mate :approve:

Hopefully Jamie can get it sorted now.

Cheers

Trust me there is no reason to sit back and look at it. It should take you the best part of a few minutes to fix. Most of the work will just be removing the 2 engine covers lol.

When you lift the engine covers, look just to the left of the engine and on top of the gearbox. You will see a few pipes etc but more importantly two gear selector cables. One of these will be flapping about and its more than likly the easiest to get to. Its bassicaly a cable with a 1 1/2 round plastic fitting moulded to the end. Once you have found it you will no doubt see the ball joint it needs to be seatet on. Then it a simple case of lining them up and pushing them back together. This might take some force like mine did and should go back with a slight "click".

Best of luck fella :approve:

Excellent thanks everyone... i am back home now for a an hour or two to watch the grand prix before i hit the drink.

My car is still at my cousins - tempted to sack GP off and go try and fix it and put my mind at rest......
Will let you know how i get one.
Duncan - dont worry about it, its just my luck lol

well just spent 5 mins with the car andit was exactly as brett said - the coupling had come loose from the ball joint.

Big relief, however my uncle wanted to test drive it so i let him..... he was taking a worryingly long time, he eventually arrived. The coupling had come off 4 times during his light test drive!

had to rush off but will investigate more tomorrow, im guessing the nylon type coupling thing has worn out as when you push it on theres no real click or sudden clip type feeling to it :s

Thats good news Jamie, at least you know what the problem is :approve:

There must be a way of fixing the end coupling, it sounds like the plastic cover is worn. Does it like the plastic coupling can be removed and replaced.

Maybe worth "jury rigging" it in the meantime ;)
