gear box

Hi
i am a bit new to these forums
I am based in HK and i have a V6 ph1 (no. 728 silver sorry need to check). i am at that dreaded stage were i need to make plans for a new gear box or gearbox rebuild.

The Gears crunch in 2nd and in 4th on hard acceleration the usual stuff as i have been informed by previous trials on the forum i have read on here.
I have some questions and would appreciate some help.

Is it best to completely swap the PK1 012 for a PH2 PK6 017?

Any contacts for PH2 gear boxes used or New? Dealer in HK quoted 10,000gbp to ship a new one in.
best price for a reconditioned 1792.23gbp ( PH2 pk6 067) service exchange unit Kine hime- Renault but shipping will cost there and back and take forever.
Renault quoted 2680.80gbp for a new ph2. no shipping.
or
Can i have the PK1 rebuilt? If so would it last or would i have the same issue a few years down the line.

can i get parts for rebuild that are an upgrade?

Where can i find the parts numbers for the replacements part? sychros etc.
Spoke with Autogear tranmissions on Ebay and they requested part numbers? not sure where i get these from?

Also it is going to be an engine out
so i will do a bit of house cleaning and would like to take advantage of replacing what whatever is possible.
list below
- oil filter
- sump plug washer
- pollen filter
- spark plugs
- Thermostat and seal
- Alternator belt
- fuel filter
clutch slave cylinder
- water pump
- Auxilliary belt kit
-clutch?
- flywheel?
-set of coils?
without labour estimates of cost?

if there is any thing else worth replacing or you wont bother with please advise.
Got a fair bit to sort out. so any opinions on upgrades for the above would also be appreciated.

I will update my profile and upload any findings to help.

most appreciative and thanks in advance.

Ph2 box is definatly the better with its closer ratios but its not a necessity. You could always get what you have refurbished. Pretty sure syncro rings aren't that expensive and the box is is pretty straight forward one to refresh.

Regarding your list, I wouldn't bother with a new flywheen unless its showing alot of wear. The ph1 has the better, lighter non dual mass type unlike the ph2 that can go wrong. Many people seem to fit new starter motors now as there was a spell of the heat breaking them up inside. That problem may have been ph2 specific though, I'm not too sure. Coils are a good shout. I would also get some tiny O rings for the PAS system if removing the engine. If it leaks, its a right pain, very messy and smelly! Think they cost about £3.00 each when i last got them. You have probably thought of this but getting the correct gearbox fluid is a must!

Just to add. Changing the gearbox IS NOT an engine out job unless you want a new cambelt at the same time. Ive done two on mine and both only took a few hours over a beer. I'd prefere to keep the engine in so not to mess around with any of the lines and hoses. Many of which are quite fragile/brittle. The only stupid thing I did was not disconneting the crank positioning sensor on the bellhousing when I removed the first box. I also struggled to bleed the slave cylinder on my own but an easybleed kit made light work of it.

Great thank you!
based on the gearbox rebuild does the repair last long if done well? sounds alot cheaper then the PH2 gearbox but dont want the issue again 2 yrs down the line?
is there somewhere to get the parts numbers for the replacement parts?
O rings for the power assisted steering? any more dets.

this is all very helpful
thanks

Changing to a ph2 gearbox will not give you any better reliability, its basically same box with slightly different cogs in it. You need to take care when driving to prevent damage with either of them, no rushed gear changes.

A well rebuilt gearbox is as good as a new one, possibly even more so as you know its history.

With careful shifting, theres nothing to stop the gearbox lasting the full lifetime of the car.

As Duncan says, the ph2 box doesn't seem any more reliable than the ph1. Its just a better box of ratios. The O rings I were refering to probably won't need changing but if you are disconnecting and reconnecting from your PAS pump whilst removing the engine. I had a leak on mine and I tried everything to stop it including a similar rubber. The only thing that stopped it was a new O ring from Renault lol Probably no wider than 10cm.

Budget for a full suspension alignment once it is all back together again!

Why is that? I had mine off time and time again but noticed no difference in camber or toe from side to side. Only reason I checked before and after was because I was thinking of doweling the subframe a little better. That was after Scott set the car up brilliantly whilst fixing a snapped bolt in a partially captive nut for me.
