Full cambelt change service - Does garage matter

Hello guys and girls,

My Vee is due its 10 year cambelt service in January, so starting to think about calling around for some prices and getting it booked in.

Would you strictly try and stick to places like SG motorsport or Ktec, or would you happilly buy a vee with a big service done by someone unknown to the club?

Im not talking about a generic Back street garage, I mean places like Mulgari (who is known to the club and had a V6) or local renaultsport specilists?

Mulgari, BTM etc; people with good reviews and those scoring well in our dealer list. All perfectly acceptable. :approve:

I consider this as 'heart surgery' for the Vee - which is why I:
a) try to avoid it by going 7.5 years between changes
b) only use the best Vee surgeons (those reputable folks that Jim-Bob mentioned)

I will be taking mine to RenaultSport specialists Birchdown Autos who are based in Malpas Cheshire.
They have carried out all the work on my RS clios & come highly recommended.

You have got to be joking about Ktec right? Elephant in the room being they are pretty damn shite at times. Ive recently seen a few pictures of just how far out of correct timing they are willing to leave a pretty generic 2.0 twin cam. Yes you might be ok this time around if you use them but thats the gamble. I've heard so many terrible reveiws about them. Yeah they might beable to scrub up a car ok and make it look pretty but its the diligence in work you can't see or notice that seperates real pro's from amatures.
You won't go wrong with Scott (from experience) but reviews show Fred (BTM), Ben (Mulgari) and a few others have very good reputations too.
If you have someone local you trust however, don't be affraid to use them. So long as they are willing not to rush it and take chances and are a little bit more methodical in there approach compared to working on the typical rep mobile or school run car, you should be fine. Its always worth remembering there are a few vee specific parts that can easily be damaged and are quite costly to replace such as a/c lines. This is sometime where experience shines through and ensures you get your car back with everything as it should be.

Mine had a cambelt change at a main dealer, it did not feel right so I stripped it myself to find the cam timing to be set wrong. I made some timing pins and set about correcting this. Now runs perfect!
It will be going to Scott next time as the value of the car deserves this, don't get me wrong here, I am perfectly capable of doing this job myself but the prospective buyer will probably not know me or my skill level whereas Scott at SG has a good reputation and the backing of the club.
