I have made a tool for removing the retaining ring that holds the fuel pump into the top of the tank, this fits whilst the tank is in the car and can be turned using a 3/8 socket set / extension, it does make things easier especially on refitting where you need 3 hands, i am prepared to lend this tool out to club members provided: 1, it costs me nothing (postage and return) and, 2, i get it back after its use.
The other way to do this is to hammer the ring off, this could snap the ring or dislodge the o ring, if snapped the ring is £28 + vat.
