For those with After market air intakes

I've had my Piper X air intake fitted for nearly four years and it’s been great but for the last few months I’ve had a faint whistle which i just put down to the air filter needing cleaning etc, well I’ve found the course of it today and I’ve had to buy a new air intake hose which goes from the air filter to the throttle body.

It seems that the new O.E hose is angled and when fitted to the air filter it becomes nearly straight putting pressure on the hose, this it seems has coursed it to split on a ribbed section underneath between the air flow sensor and the throttle body. The split was that bad I could get four fingers in the split!

Just thought I’d share this with you all as when I’ve looked before I couldn’t find anything wrong.

I think it also helps if you mount the piper-x in such a way as it's not rigid and so exerts no stress on the OEM hose . You may very well have done this originally but the filter may have shifted perhaps.

If i had left it loose so there was no stress on the air hose it would have never fitted due to the angle of the O.E air hose and due to the size of the Piper X it would foul the inner wheel arch area of the engine bay. I will have more of a look this week as changing my Thermostat so with engine covers off i may well be able to get a better idea of how to rectify the problem so it doesn't happen again.

Just out of interest the Air hose with the Airflow sensor is only £44 from Reno, a breaker tried to charge me £75+vat.

Since i've fitted the new air hose i'm getting 28.5 mpg on the motorway to work, thats up by 1.5 mpg, god i'm sad [smilie=drunken_smilie1.gif]

See what your saying ...

Just some ideas though ... My piper-x kit and I think 1 other I fitted (done 3 now) had a long extendable replacement 4 inch hose from the side-pod to the air-filter inlet. This allows the filter to be fitted fully-floating more easily. I checked mine this afternoon and it has full movement in all directions - apart from up and down. I know the OEM hose is a little short and quite hard to fit to the piper-x filter as I have done 1 like that but still mounted the filter loosely.

I seem to remember that the I left the large jubilee clip undone with the mounting bolt on it. Then fitted the filter to the two hoses and did up the hose clips. Then finally I adjusted the mounting bolt so at it fitted through one of the rubber mounting grommets in the OEM filter bracket. Then used a big washer and a nylock nut but didn't tighten it up so as to leave the filter loosely attached.

Thanks for that ive had thesame problem before!!!

Samco resolved the issue if i remember correctly but not knowingly - by chance!!! :D

Is there a samco replacement part then? I need to replace mine - might as well replace it with something with a semblance of quality as opposed to the usual Renault shit
