Description

At ten years old this does qualify as a Retro Renault, and I feel they were a classic from the day they were launched even if they were a Gallic oddity. It's a "marmite" car for sure, but few would fail to be impressed by the lavish equipment levels and luxurious interior and the condition of this Vel Satis...

2002 Renault Vel Satis Initiale 3.0 dCi V6. Reflex Silver Pearlescent with cream Connolly leather upholstery. Genuine 37,000 miles from new with Full Renault Main Dealer Service History. 1 former keeper and current well-heeled owner for past 7 years who's sadly giving up driving at 75 years old through ill health. Garaged from new and in as timewarp condition throughout as one could hope for.

MoT to April 2013, tax to November 2012. Engine service just carried out and the car had £600 spent on it at Fish Brothers Renault in Swindon in November 2011 having new wheel rear bearings, brake discs etc.

The car has the standard "Initiale" flagship specification plus 18-inch Villa D'Este alloy wheels, Renault SatNav system, CD autochanger, rear parking sensors and distance radar cruise control. This was a £30,000 car when new, so naturally comes with automatic climate control, electric seats, headlamps that turn on automatically, folding mirrors etc.

The colour scheme is extremely attractive, the special silver paintwork having a lilac flip in some lights and a classy beige tone in darker conditions, it's the same colour that Renault featured in the Vel Satis launch brochure, so probably the best colour for showing off the car's distinctive lines.

The 3.0 diesel engine is powerful and refined at speed but frugal too, achieving 30mpg+, (the engine was built by Isuzu) The 5-speed automatic gearbox (Toyota-sourced) changes gear almost imperceptibly and switching the gearbox into manual "Tiptronic" mode enables quite spirited driving and the car accelerates with impressive gusto.

Any Vel Satis is a rare care but one with this low mileage and impeccable provenance must be a rare commodity indeed. Saliently, the car has always been in regular use despite the low annual mileage, which is infinitely preferable to being laid up dormant, which does a car no favours at all. In today's terms the car has covered the equivalent of just 3 year's mileage and the way the car looks and drives is exactly what one could expect of 3 year old car if not better.

these were retro even before they were released, i happen to think theyre a beauty of a car, rare enough too and one of the rare cars that all three top gear presenters think is great... best of luck with the sale

I love these and the Avantime,. I will own both one day.

Best of luck with the sale its a bit on the high side but tbh its easy to see why its a great example.

That is really special, I'd love to own it but it's the wrong size for me. If it was dark grey I'd have bought it anyway, it's awesome!

I've looked all over the internet and I can't find a picture of what it looks like with the boot open. :?

It looks like it should have some kind of mechanism rather than a normal plain hinge, so as not to catch doesn't it.

aye, i believe they are a hatch, someone on the rank at work has the exact same one as these, he has to get rid of his too sometime within the next year, so i shall tell him to try here to sell, lol

SOLD to 1st viewer - a collector who also has a 3.0 V6 Avantime in his garage, I didn't even know they did that model with a similar engine to the mid-engined Clio, must be rather special.

Seems people who have owned a Vel Satis when they were new really loved them and regret selling them, so they needn't be the overly complex and costly to maintain white elephants that many people would have you believe they are!

Good it sold, the v6 was one of the more popular ones!

I will have one of each (vel satis and avantime) someday when I have time and space etc.
