Fast Daily Car Dilemma & Owning Vee

Hi All,

I have a small dilemma and I'd like to hear from those of you who have a daily driver (or maybe even another weekend toy) that is quite rapid. Maybe as fast as the Clio; Maybe even quicker?

My 2 cars are the Vee, and a Skoda Fabia (obviously my daily). I'd like to replace the Skoda with something nicer, and I'm looking at the Audi A5s. Now me being me, I've started looking at the faster ones, and have my eye on a 3.0 Litre TDI Quattro.

Being diesel, it obviously has more torque than the Clio, and has similar performance in a straight line. Obviously handling and presence are in a different league with the Vee.

Whilst trying to choose, a couple of people have mentioned that I may not drive the Vee much any more given that the daily driver is a fast & comfortable car also.

Have I got anything to worry about? I know this might sound like a daft question, but I'd like to hear if anyone has any thoughts!!

Cheers :)
Phil.

No, that simply isn't the case. Speed is all relative regardless of numbers given to you. Funnily enough, a good friend of mine had an S5 when they first came out. Beautiful car and utterly effortless performance. (I'd be suprised if the Tdi v6 will be on par with your vee). He also had a scruffy little Clio Williams. He would always grab the keys to the relatively slow Williams as it was more engaging and he smiled alot. Different enjoyment and at sub 90mph. Was hard to keep the S5 under 90mph.
Get the A5. Its not a "performance" orientated car and will be very nice sitting next to a vee.

The A5 will probably bore you to tears so not really a problem.

Problem arises when you have two good 'driving' cars. Life's too short to be driving dull cars (when you have the option of driving something good everyday). Never really understood the daily hack/weekend car thing.

My daily was an A5 Sportback Quattro which I loved, I sold it and now have a brand new 520d M Sport which I like but not as much as the A5, but I also have a 535d M Sport though which I love to bits, it's got every option available from the factory and has had a custom re-map, it really is an amazing car for a derv.

So that's what I'd get if I was looking.

And how do you feel driving the BMW compared to the Vee?

It's actually quite exiting for a barge, it's like it has endless torque and puts the same smile on my face as the Vee.

Although driving the Vee is like an Event every time I take the 535 out knowing I'm in a derv that can embarrass a lot of quick cars puts a cheeky little grin on my face.

Clio 182 Trophy highly recommended as a daily driver and returns 40+mpg on a steady drive :)

Had mine nearly 4 years now and still gives me a grin factor along the back roads.

M3 is my daily. I barely drive the clio. But when I do I still enjoy it...after the first 10mins.

Chipped and tweaked Defender 110 daily driver though will be Wildtrack 3.2 in a few days, all totally different so different smiles. A5 about as exciting as a wet fart in my opinion, German cars are generally so efficient as dailies as to be uninspiring but they do do it well, the vee by comparison is a far more engaging drive as it has a whole raft of idiosyncratic habits!!

The A5 although it may be quick and comfortable it just won't feel exciting to drive, I'd imagine it'll be fairly dull and the fact that it runs on the devils fuel means it won't make a nice sound either

The Vee will always be special in so many ways that an ordinary car could never be, get the A5 but you'll still need a Vee in your life :race:

I've had an M135i daily for 19 months now and I usually have to force myself to take the clio, even on hot sunny days. The BMW simply wipes the floor with it in every department, except occasion and drama.

I've got a deposit on an M2 which is due around November 2015, and I fear that if Vee prices keep rising... I'm going to buckle and sell up! [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

You've sold up before!

No way back next time...
; )

Got the A5 TDI 3.0litre Quattro today, really love it!

Completely and uterly different to the V6 but still very nice it's own GT kind of way :-)

The current daily car is an E30 with 20 year old tyres on. That's exciting in its own special way. Could do with air con/a radio/better economy/less rattles though...

For me Phil it's the Audi S3, great pocket rocket with 265BHP but all the creature comforts like heated leather seats, nice ride, back seats....what more could you ask for!!!!
To be honest I didn't go looking for this car...,it found me!!!!!I was looking for a nice 197F1 or Meg 265 but after driving them felt a little let down. When a mate came along and mentioned the S3. Took it for a test drive and game over.... Sold
Now got the itch for the RS4 [smilie=yay.gif]

Compared with a tractor a Prius or a Daewoo Matiz would be wildly exciting!  This I know, unless you are heading down a 1 in 3 bank with no brakes in neutral with 15 tonnes of grain on the back, then adrenaline is definitely brown!! :approve:

Very nice car indeed. I took a look at the RS5, but it's quite pricey and only available in auto or semi-auto! booo...
