Exhaust downpipe removal mk2

Has anyone removed the rear downpipe with the engine in situ? Mine has failed and I have a replacement waiting to go in. I tried the other week but after taking rr bumper and backbox off I couldn't get to the 3 manifold studs for love or money.
Anyone with any wisdom that they care to share?
Cheers

Hi mate,

Yes I managed to take my downpipes off with the car in situ reversed onto 2 ramps. Rear covers and top covers both removed.

I firstly soaked all of the 3 manifold downpipes bolts with wd40 overnight as these will have siezed tight. Then removed the 2 heatsheild covers held in by 3 bolts. You should then be able to access the bolts that hold the manifold to the downpipe (these are quite trickey to release and from memory I think are a star ratchet). Once these bolts are off it s a case of going underneath the car and then releasing the bolts which connect the downpipe to the collector box (soak these in wd40 the night before again). These are also a star fit. You may need to remove the cat heatsheild to get the downpipe out. Be prepared for abit of manovering to get these out ( they took me ages to get out).

Hope that helps! Give me a pm mate if you get stuck and ill drop you my mobile number.

Cheers,

Matt.

Cheers Matt.
So you access the manifold bolts from the top then? I couldn't get anywhere near 2 of them from underneath.
I'll give it a crack from the top.
With reference to the wd40 comment, have you heard of plusgas? It's specifically designed four freeing seized nuts and bolts. It works in minutes. Well worth getting for those " characterful" nuts.
I'll try and photo the process and add it to the knowledgebase so everyone can see how it goes. Rear cat seems to be yet another design flaw in the vee.

Hi,

Yep can get them out from the top - need to remove heat sheild first but that was my first job the night beofre getting down pipes off. Didnt take too long to get the manifold bolts off.

I've added some info here on how to do it - LINK

This time I could get to the manifold studs but one of them has rounded. Other 2 came off reasonably easily after a soaking with plusgas. Think I'm gonna have to dremmel the remaining nut off. Great fun. Rental car for me this week I think.
The collector nuts are in a right mess. Gonna cut them off too.

Oh, might be tricky then pal. Not much room too. I had to be quite careful with the star nut - god knows why Renualt and Peugeots all put them on things. Give me a shout if you need anymore info about removal. Getting the car downpipe heatsheild off was quite tricky as it's quite tight - soak those bolts in plusgas too.

It's just got a lot worse. Turns out its not just the rear primary but the front one too. The front is completely shred off and its melted the handbrake cable too.

when you say the nuts, or stars are rounding off, are you trying to undo them with normal sockets? or are you using star sockets?

Matt, the front pipe, does it go back on with the heatshield on or off?
Can't work out how it fits up into the gap. See what you mean about it being a bastard
