engine temperture....

wen i was driving the other day wen it was -5 my temp guage just didnt budge from the bottom even though i drove about 30 miles on the motorway, but as soon as i got into stop start town driving it went up. then as soon as i blasted down the motorway again the temp guage drops right down again.
wen temp guage is down it makes the heaters colder and my car steams up. is this normal coz it doesnt do this in any of my other cars! :s

I think that the cooling system on the Vee is excelent they learnt the hard way from previous mid engined cars, if it was anything near as cold as it was near me then wouldnt worry. But maybe the thermostate is stuck open worth checking not to bad to get too.

Well reminded ...

Mine still does this as demonstrated on a drive last week of around 50 miles at -5 degrees where the temperature needle hardly moved above a 3rd, sometimes remaining much lower. Various experiments duing the drive such as switching off the heater, driving at higher revs, slowing down etc. all raised the engine temps. So clearly due to the ambient temps and air-flow through the front radiator pointing to an issue with coolant circulation/thermostat. Annoying only in very cold weather really but 2 visits to Renault before it ran out of warranty didn't confirm anything despite me specifically asking them to check the thermostat because of course the engine gets to temperature if the car is stood idling for a few minutes ...

I will follow Monkeys excellent posts and try and fix it myself.

Long live the forum [smilie=bowdown.gif]

On an mr2 turbo that would be a broken thermostat. I managed to break mine while heating some rusty rusty bolts to get the catalyser off the car.

90% certain you have a broken thermostat.

monkeys posts are the ones on this, i have the same thing going on and am going to change the termostat in a few weeks, i will take some photos and make a how to guide as monkey says the reno instructions are next to useless. It can be done just by taking off the top covers off the engine. It is all to do with how the gasket is inserted - apparently!
