Engine out and suspension

Mr Webb

New Member
Renault have just done my cambelt and having taken it on a test drive after are trying to tell me there is something wrong with my NSR suspension as it is making a knocking noise. They have checked all their work and are convinced it is from the shock or the mount.

There was defiantely, definately no noise before.

Does anyone know if they could have in any way interfered with the rear suspension in doing the cambelt, water pump etc.

Cheers.

If they dropped the engine then the answer is yes (and they probably did unless they have special "french fingers").

I considered using a specialist long and hard but as there isn't one within 100 miles so went for the largest Reno dealer locally. After a few chats with the service manager he told me they have done several V's and Spyders. Reassured I thought if I ain't happy with it I ain't paying!!

I went and spoke to them on Friday afternoon and took the car out with the senior technician who had worked on V's and seemed to know his stuff. They had all noise detecting equipment with headphones on the car and had isolated the noise to the passenger shock. The workshop looked quite slick actually.

They have said that the shock could have been pulled to a level not usually not reached under the weight of the wheel when the engine was out so they will put in a new shock for cost and no other charge. Should be about £300 if it needs the full shock or less if it just a mount etc.

I haven't paid for anything yet and have had the car back to use over the weekend so I can drive it and see what I think.

I will probably never know if the shock was on its way out so I guess I have to cough up!

Other than this problem I am happy with their work. Car runs as before and no dings or scratches!!

The technician did tell me it was possible to do the job with the engine in but it is only an hour to get it out so they did.

At least the belt is done now so I have many more years before I have to do it again!

Good luck to all those MK2 owners who's belt change is coming up!!!

How much was it to have done at the Dealer and which dealer was it? I was quoted over £2k for cambelt and water pump at main dealer up in Lancashire.

For the 24,000 mile service, water pump and belt it was £1,097 including a 15% discount for having all the work done at the same time. It should have been around £1,800 but they mis-quoted me and the had to honour it!

Not sure what the total will be yet with my shock absorber issue but should be less than £1,500!

They have to make the money up some how, they can't make a loss!

Good price though from a main Dealer of £1,800 all in.

Mines going to SG or Clarkie.

We just got a quote from Martins Renault in Winchester for a Phase 1 V6 to change cam belt, Tensioners, belts and all parts associated including labour, parts, and vat for £1086.00p and they have a Renualt sport technician on site.

And most cambelt changes require engine out HTH

Which Renault garage did you go to for this?
