Yes both Mk1 and Mk2 have a shift light. This comes on a few hundred revs before you hit the red-line to indicate that you're approaching the rev limit and should change gear. This is not necessarily the optimum point to shift. You should see the light (green with a gearstick on it on a Mk2) light momentarily as part of the dashboard checks when you start the car.
