does anyone make a proper clutch for these cars?

i.e so when you try and do a quick start you dont sit there revving and going no-where followed by a nasty clutch smell [smilie=dunno1.gif]

really bugs me like!!

Putting one in mine at the moment.
Trophy flywheel and Tilton twin plate rally clutch.....the Trophy clutch turned out to be a different spline.

Not for your everyday town/traffic driver though.....and not cheap either.

They do make it I believe, but the spline for the Trophy is a nat's difference to the spline on the standard gearbox.
It would be possible to get the Trophy plates with the correct spline I believe but the rally version should allow a little more slippage....

it wouldnt bother me how heavy it is etc..

as long as it..

A) bolts right in
B) lets me do some proper traffic light launches lol

i'll be fancying one!

Would you be prepared to pay about 460 pound for a plate which just fits in place of the original one?

It gives you then the possibility to do traficlight jumpstarts, and has no slip.

I have one in my car now 25000km, it was experimental based on WRC clutches, kevlar carbon.

If there is serious interest I could ask the company if they are willing to produce a small batch. It's not their daily job though, and there is no warranty they will produce for replacements after.

harry...more information please!

sounds interesting...need a month or 2 till I get my seats done..

but after that..its KW's and the clutch will definately help!!

bet if you do the clutch and sort that a few launches later it will be the box or diff thats knackered.

That is definately a possibility! :(

The clutch currently protects the rest of the drivetrain from the pain of a hard launch.

God that sucks like..

why did renault have to add a stupid big engine over the rear wheels! :s

It really pains me..when you cant just launch the car for fear of that dreaded smell and what your doing to the poor clutch
but..as you say..rather wreck a clutch than a gearbox :(

@stoneyV6,
I recon you got practical experience with it, so please provide me with info, so I can look into it.
(Standard Mk2 engine destroying a gearbox after hard launches).

CollinG I wouldn't be too worried, I've tested it quite a bit and it works ok, my box is still ok with the new clutchplate(currently 15000km).
And I also perform hard launches.

I recon some people just heard a few bits here and there. The main problem of the PK6 gearbox is the allowable torque. I asked the engineeringdept of Renault, and they came with 320Nm as absolute maximum.
The standard engine delivers on paper 300Nm, in practice it will be less. The weak part in the gearbox is the diff housing, (I think MikeT can confirm this) not the gears.
The hard launch is destructive if there is a lot of play in the gearingparts, which isn't the case with the PK6.
Even a hard launch doesn't produce more than max torque. It just comes on quickly.
Best thing to do before you perform a hard launch is to settle the box, meaning break slightly, release the clutch a little bit, so the box gets under a bit of tention, meaning forward moving play put to zero.

Quite agree with that. Your going to damage and gear box or diff with a aggressive release of the clutch, there are plenty or evo's and imprza's on you-tube breaking after revving and going for a hard start. Like harry said settle the box so that is has torque applied on it then get the revs up a bit and release on the clutch

I abused my clutch/gearbox mercilessly in the early days using Harry's technique. I used to get consistent 0-60 times of 5.5-5.8 from a then slightly modified Mk1 (with the weaker gearbox). Never had a problem with it and I've just been at Scott's today looking at the clutch off the car for the first time. The condition was pretty good considering and not as bad as many they've seen. It was also subject to a few launches with the nitrous at 330lbs/ft torque @ 3000rpm.........Someone can convert that to Nm for me.........nearly 450 I think!!!
